A while back on some section of the Forum, there was a mention of the "best steel albums". I've been away for a couple of weeks picking with good friends in Nova Scotia, so I haven't been on the forum.

In January 1987, Guitar Player celebrated it's 20th anniversary, and they featured 20 Essential this and that. The 20 Essential Steel Albums were:

1. Sol Hoopii-Master of the Hawaiian Guitar
2. Jerry Byrd-Byrd In Hawaii
3. Okeh Western Swing-Various Artists
4. Spade Cooley & Tex Williams-Oklahoma Stomp
5. Hank Williams-24 Of Hank Williams Greatest Hits
6. Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant-Two Guitars Country Style
7. Buddy Emmons-Steel Guitar Jazz
8. Buck Owens-Buck Owens
9. Connie Smith-Best Of Connie Smith
10. Curly Chalker-Big Hits On Big Steel
11. Ray Price-Ray Price Greatest Hits
12. Byrds-Sweetheart of the Rodeo
13. Doug Jernigan-Uptown to Country
14. Charlie Pride-Charlie Pride In Person
15. Emmons, Maness, Rhodes, Kleinhow, Young-Steel Suite
16. Flying Burrito Bros-Close Up The Honky Tonks
17. Paul Franklyn-Play by Play
18. Poco-Pickin’ Up The Pieces
19. Roger Miller-Trip In The Country
20. Freddy Roulette-Sweet Funky Steel

While they were listed in this order, it's not an order of greatness. I wonder if anybody did like this obsessive/compulsive being did. For the ones I didn't already have, I went on a search for all of them, and the only one I couldn't find was Freddy Roulette's.

It was an interesting overview, based on their reasons for the steel players on the specified albums.

Given the era, Tony Booth should have had an album or two on that list, e.g. "When A Man Loves a Woman" is full of Jay Dee's steel.

Was there a "byline" as far as who chose the albums, and wrote the piece? Steve Fishell wrote some stuff for them back in the day...

In any case it's nice to even remember a mainstream publication being that hip about steel. I'm sure we all have our favorites that we feel should be on there too, but that's a pretty damned good start!

All of Lloyd Green's recordings should be on that list.

Vance Terry-Jimmie Rivers and the Cherokees, Brisbane Bop

would be another good addition to the list.
