The Tutmarcs (Doug on guitar, Greg on steel) have uploaded a bunch of stuff on YouTube, including some of their performances at (what look like) church meetings. Too bad about the background noise...

There's also some Sol Hoopii audio, Bonnie Guitar, and ukulele instruction if you're so inclined...
I've never met their father, Paul (Bud) Tutmarc Jr., but from comparing pictures Greg looks just like him!
Question: Can anyone tell what kind of steel Greg is playing? Could it possibly be one of his father's Serenaders? Or even one of his grandfather Paul Tutmarc Sr.'s Audiovoxes?
It doesn't look like my Audiovox, but mine is a 7 string. It also has a different headstock from Audiovox 6 strings:
I don't know what Serenader six strings look like.
I guess it's entirely possible he's using some other kind of steel, but considering his family history I just assumed he'd be using one of his father's or grandfather's. Can anyone ID it for me? |

I met Bud Tutmarc in 1985 in Seattle and he was the catalyst that motivated me to learn steel guitar. I started playing a couple of years later at the Aloha Steel Guitar Club in Winchester.
In one telephone contact with Bud in recent years before his death, he told me that he was teaching his son, Greg, to play steel guitar. So Greg has not been playing very long.
The steel guitar that Greg is playing looks like his father's guitar. Bud built that guitar himself. He only needed six strings, because he did a lot of single note picking and very smooth I might add.
Here is a video of the classic gospel song written and composed by Sol Ho'opii featuring Gene on the steel and Doug on the rhythm guitar and solo.
My Beautiful King of Kings
This song has been played by various steel guitarists many times at steel guitar conventions over the years. Again, it is considered a classic by most because of Sol Ho'opii.
Greg, indeed, looks like his father.
I hope some of this fills in the blanks.
Aloha,

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Greg, however I did meet Doug many years ago at Winchester. Yes, Greg does bear a strong resemblance to his dad (Bud) with whom I enjoyed a close friendship. Bud and Opal stayed in our humble home for a week many years ago. Looking at that steel guitar, it appears to be one that Bud made. He also made one for (the late) Keith Worley (England). As I listen to Greg, I detect some of Bud's tone and styling in his playing. Bud was a firm believer in the C#m tuning throughout his entire playing career. If I am correct, Greg is using this tuning also. Great to hear the Tutmarc music tradition carrying on to a third generation. |
