Topic: Which psg convention to go to? |

I have never been to a steel guitar convention before. I am really thinking about planning a trip and I want it to be worthwhile.
From what I can tell, The StLois and Dallas conventions are the big two. Which one of thee conventions would yall recommend. Which one do you usually enjoy the most. |

| While the ISGC in St. Louis is the biggest show, the Texas show is awesome. I try to make it every year and see the great players perfrom. The Texas show is held the 2nd weekend in March in Irving,Texas. There are so many going on now and Tennessee has some great shows as well. I can tell you where ever you go it will be a blast. I can't comment on Dallas, but I can tell you I have had great times at St Louis, not just for the playing but also for meeting other players and Forum members and there families.
it's a packed house for sure..
Last year I felt was the best year so far for me, I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in easily 25 years.
I am thinking this year will be just as good..
Dallas is on the plate for next year as well..
Another show I had a great time at was in Nashville at one of the Super Jams, I think it was a Nov jam....

I liked the Mesa Az. show in Jan.It's laid back nice weather nice folks,great players.

| Dallas !!!! Hands down. I've been to the last 14 shows and do St Louis once every four to five years. Number one....the food is much better AND much cheaper...the leadership (Albert Talley and gang) cannot be beat...you don't pay to park...There's awesome steak houses in the area....AND...the airport is next door with free shuttle service. |

My wife and I found the St.Louis Convention to be a really fine event. I had the sense it was more of a SHOW PLACE for the truly great ones.
On the other hand, we both felt Dallas was a closer knit gathering with plenty of SHOW TIME sparkle and yet, a place where one could reach out and touch somebody........the Red Roof Motel was Great and allowed our little puppy in our room.
The Hawaiian event in Joliet, Illinois, was far less "SHOW TIME" but provided fine entertainment and a very strong feeling of togetherness and mingling of friends and strangers alike.
The Northwest Steel Guitar Assn. in Spokane, WA, is a growing event with lots of socializing and time for making new friends. Most likely, all of the events are quite similar.....and getting to meet new folks that you'll grow to like is a wonderful social experience.
You likely will enjoy yourself whichever site you might choose. |

| All of the shows mentioned above are great, but I would add that you have a very highly regarded show right in your own state, the Saluda show which I think runs 4x a year. Lots of top quality players on that show. But perhaps you've been to that, yes? |

| I did go to the saluda convention once and met the nicest people and actually talked to some very well known players. Met Russ Hicks down there and bought his album and picking course. He's seemed to be a real nice guy with a great sense of humor. Bought some records too from others but I don't recall seeing any booths set up for a particualar brand of guitar or anything like that. I would like to go where I can listen up close and maybe try out different steels. I'm assuming that the big steel shows do this but then again I don't know much about these conventions. |

Two shows I have made a promise to myself to make every year. Dallas in March and the NTSGA Super Jam in Nashville 1st weekend of October.

The ISGC is "The Show" or as Buddy Emmons once put it, "The Mother of All Steel Shows". You have to go to the ISGC at least once.
The Dallas show is the 2nd biggest (although the Texan's would like to disagree). |

St Louis is closer:
in time and distance.
If you had only ONE show to ever go see,
you should see the ISGC.
Been twice and each time was great.
Classic steel playing in many rooms.
All the big makers displaying.
Hawaiian room
and the new Jazz room.
Even a little get together for the
foriegn steelers who show up.
Plus little rooms and pickin' in the hallways sometimes.
My next time is Dallas for sure.
But if I only had one to get to...

If you live in the Northeast the one to catch each year is the PSGA show in Conn. on Veterans Day weekend. They will be celebrating their 34 anniversary this year and next to Scotty's this is the longest running show and steel organization to date.

| As a member of the house band at PSGA, I can say it's a fine show deserving of better attendance and support. I know a lot of steelers within a few hours drive that miss out every year. That said, I've been twice to the Dallas show and really had a good time. Haven't been to St. Louis yet. |

Yeah, Russ plays that same gag on everyone. 
I've never been to the Dallas show, but always hear wonderful compliments like those above. I intend to get down there someday and see/hear for myself. I've been to Scotty's a number of times and will be going again this year. I think others are right in that you have to go at least once just to experience it.

I have been to several of the steel shows all over the country, I really like Dallas show because I am in to western swing an they do a lot of it.All the steel shows are great, But Scotty's steel show is where all it got started from, with out it none of the rest may have not have happen, that is why every body calls this the grand daddy of all the shows, come see for your self you won't be sorry. You would not believe the history that has taken place on the St Louis stage, when I look back all the shows in last 30+ years I get goose bumps just thinking of them.
