Hi all,

I just bought a new leather computer/portfolio bag. I need to have it water proofed. So what can I put on the leather to protect the bag and keep it from cracking without staining dress clothes, etc.?
I was going to silicone it, but that may cause it to crack the leather.

Carnauba Creme, or Mink Oil, or beeswax (ex: SnoSeal) compounds are great for waterproofing and conditioning genuine leather products. There is an excellent article here about the correct methods to use on different types of leather.

You should test whatever compound you buy on a small area first, to see if it discolors the leather (you didn't say what color it is). Oil based waterproofers will darken light colored leather. Mink oil and Carnauba Creme soften leather and protect it from water and from drying out.

Wiz,

It's a burnt looking tan. It is the Heritage bag that I bought at Staples.

Then try Mink oil or beeswax first. The Mink oil is available in thin cans wherever shoe supplies are sold. It can be applied with a soft non-fraying cloth, or with lamb's wool pieces. Apply a bit to a bottom corner with your finger and spread it around that area. Wait about ten minutes then check that area for discoloration. If happy happy, do the entire surface in an even coat and buff it in with wool. If you can't find a piece of lamb's wool use the softest cloth available, like chamois, like you would use to buff a car.

I used to be a professional leathercrafter, which is how I know this stuff.

Your second choice would be leather footware beeswax in a can or jar, with Carnauba creme being choice number three.

After you buff these compounds in your case will glow!

Do not use baseball glove oil on a tan colored case or it will seriously darken it in splotches, as the oil gets absorbed more or less in different sections.

This oil will darken tan leather. It is very thin and is easily absorbed into soft areas, which it will darken more than harder areas, leaving an uneven surface color. If this is desirable then Neatsfoot Oil is fine, but I don't recommend it, except for baseball gloves.
