Topic: Extra fun decals on steel |

| Over the years I have seen players put decals on their steels just for fun. I have seen decals at big shows of American Flags, "ying yang" signs, Mickey Mouse, peace signs and even a likeness of some guy found on rolling paper packs.It seemed more popular "back in the day" but I've been keeping my eye open for a decal for years but never found one I liked or had the nerve to "desecrate" my Carter. I've seen great and lousy players add decals to their steels and valuable guitars (more guitars than steel). I know its a ridiculous point but I was just curious to see if any of you out there put on an extra decal on your steels just for fun!Thanks. |

| Several years ago I was at an auto trim shop with Jeff Newman. He was having some decals made up for one of his RC airplanes. There were samples on the wall of several designs the owner had done. I saw one of the Volkswagon "Farfanugen" decals and said I needed one that said "Farfromgruvin" for my guitar. He thought about it and went back and had one made and put it on the front of my laquer Zum. I left it on there even when I sold the guitar. I believe it's still on it today. |

And awhile back, "some of these Forumites" looked down on those who simply put their "NAMES" on the front of their steels.
Never figured out the reasoning why a guy will buy a $30,000,-40,000 Dodge Ram pickup with dualies and then mess up the expensive paint by slapping cheap decals from every tire, battery and accessory manufacturer all over the rig? Hummmm? |

MY old MSA had 3 tags on it. A sticker with red bloodshot eyes, a CAT Diesel Power metal tag that was on it when i sold it & a cloisonne (spelled right? ) ROlling Stones logo.. the 'sticky fingers' mouth logo..
I don't think I will be putting anything on my new Derby.
I think names are ok if tastefully done.

I just noticed to day while working on my Fender 1000 tha if I hold the pedal rack at just the right anngle I can see the name "Lloyd Whitley" was on it at ne time - looks like it must have been some sort of decal, as there's just enough fading of the paint around it to make it out.
I never understood plastering one's name on an instrument, but it sure seemed a big thing in the 50's and 60's.

Jim, remember when every drummer had the bands' name or logo on the kick drum? Even Ringo.
I think drummers might have started the fad. Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich always had their initials on the kick drum.

I put several stickers on the front of a black '74 MSA I had, never did it to another guitar since.

| To me, putting your name on the front of your steel is no different than all the stars with their names on their guitar straps. It's mine, and I paid for it. Besides, I'm a sign painter and I can take it off when I want to. I know one steel player that hangs a 10" x 18" wood sign with just his name on it, on the front of his steel. Larry |

Years ago I had some glow in the dark Spider man stickers on my P/P !
More recently I was playing in my band "The Dead Livers" and after going through a liver transplant I had a decal that read The New Livers on my guitar . People said it was an ironic situation , whatever that meant . |

My adopted Fender used to have Mr. Ricky Davis' supposedly indelible signature...it appears to have disappeared though..

I had my name carved in my tele and filled with wood putty as a way of insuring that it it was ever lost or stolen I'd get it back. Aside from being an inherently great instrument, the guitar has a home made B string bender made by my father who passed away 3 years ago, and has great sentimental value.
Sure enough, the the guitar was stolen, and I did get it back because my name is inlayed in it.

I put stickers on the top, where I can enjoy them... I currently have Team Rocket from Poke'mon between the fretboard and pickup on my Zum.
Jesse is almost as much of a hottie as that leopardskin pseudo Bettie Page decal of Chas'... I am a fool for redheads

Sorry to go off topic here, but I have a question for Chas- What type of guitar is the leopard lady on? I can make out a ten string neck, a five-string bass neck and what looks like a shorter neck. Pretty cool.

The first time i met Ralph Mooney he was playing for Winn Stewart at Georges Round Up in Long Beach,Ca.There was a bright light on the floor pointing up to the front of Ralphs steel with his name in big letters on it.
He took off his picks and handed them to me and ask if i wanted to sit in and he didn't know me from Adam.But he knew the guy i went in there with.He went with Winns drummer.
Now hold it right there.Winn had a girl drummer.lol.Think her name was Helen Price but not sure as it was so long ago.Any one out there know?
The guy i was with played drums at the Skylight Club in Compton i think it was.His home town was not far from mine in Tx. |

I am fellow sign painter..when I traded an old "Tele" to Jeff Newman for his old RusLer it had his name painted with One-Shot on the front,,I removed his name and it left a shadow of his name..I lettered my name on it to cover up the shadow, but then felt kinda funny about my name being there,, so I covered IT up with an American Flag.
When Kenny Howard, AKA "Von Dutch" died I painted his "Flying Eyeball" logo on the front in memory of his contribution to "Hot Rod" folks of my generation.

Nathan, that's Guitarzilla. There's a picture on page 2 over in the 'show your guitars' thread. It has a short scale 10, a long scale 10, a 5-string bass, each of which have pickups on both ends of the neck, and a bolt on titanium tube frame neck with 12 strings, for the pitched material. At the moment, the two 10 string necks are strung with 6 strings and there are plates with inconel rods, as well as titanium rods woven into the strings.
I have the dragon decal on a couple other instruments as well. I got it at a very spiritual place, Pep Boys.... |
