I apologize for posting this in a musical category, but does anyone out there have any recommendations for musical and non-musical Hawaiian history, culture, and art books? I have Lorene Ruymar's book and plan to get Andy Volk's for steel guitar history, but I'm more interested in the "bigger picture".

Thanks for any help.

The granddaddy of them all is "Hawaiian Music and Musicians" published in 1979 by the University of Hawaii Press and edited by George S. Kanahele.

"HAWAIIAN MUSIC and MUSICIANS" is now considered to be a rare find. If you can obtain a copy, it is chock full of great information ! Check out page 50...what a great honor. Another rare book is Tony Todero's "GOLDEN YEARS OF HAWAIIAN ENTERTAINMENT" which was book one of many planned editions. Unfortunately Tony passed away suddenly and his goal was never achieved. However this edition is a "must have" if you can ever find a copy. It consists 90% of great pictures, 10% text.
Another bit of rare reading is "SWEET LEILANI" ... the bio of Harry Owens along with Hilo Hattie, (Clara Inter).

Since this doesn't relate to lap steel, I'm moving it to Music from No Peddlers.
