Are the pup and knobs original? Also, did they ever put pups on Sho-Bros without the Gretsch name on the peghead?

They appear to be added later to me, but I'm not an expert on Sho-Bro guitars at all.
Are you planning on playing this lap style? It seems to have a round neck based on the photos.

Brad,
I'm just wondering what this would sound like with that pickup--or any pickup. I have a 7-string Sho Bro square neck, and it's definitely got an unusual sound. I think Shot was trying to make a dobro that was just for country and not for bluegrass. (Sort of like folk banjos vs bluegrass banjos.)
Michael Lee Allen has sent me a lot of info about Sho-Bros, and I don't see anything in there about pickups. Maybe Gretsch started putting them in later. |

A friend of mine had a Sho-Bro 'custom made' for him back in the late 1970s/early 80's. Squareneck, with a factory installed transducer pickup, which was not visible on the guitar. I think it was either inside the body, under the cover plate, or maybe on the bridge. It had vol & tone controls and a 1/4" output jack. I played it on stage a couple of times and it had a real sweet tone. It sounded more mellow than most dobros. The owner had his name inlaid in 'mother of pearl' across the fingerboard! It was a beautiful instrument.

I did indeed get the archive you sent. Many thanks. I'm very grateful to get it. I think a lot of this just isn't available anywhere else. And you even organized it so I know where I can look up something about Sho Bud, Sho-Bro, Dobro, Guild etc.
I have a nice item coming your way: a big glossy pro photo with sharp focus and fine color of an old Bigsby steel and two Bigsby guitars.
Are you writing a book or compiling a library or something like that? There would be libraries, repositories, museums etc, that would like to have your records. There is a lot of research going on about the history of music, musicians, instruments, etc. Somebody writing about Mike Auldridge could use it because there are materials in there that you can't find any other way. |
