In my effort to move from mediocre musicianship to mediocre+ musicianship, I've been working on trying to improve how I phrase a melody and better dig into the time. Here's my version of Jobim's Bossa Nova standard, Vivo Sonhando (Dreamer). A little intonation trouble on the turnaround but otherwise a good snapshot of where I am.

Hi Andy,
Nice Andy. It must have been a lot of work to learn that tune.
I've been playing Girl from Ipanema for a while and just recently learned Meditation (appropriately named). To me, steel guitar seems well suited for bossas. Playing them is a new experience for me and really enjoyable.

| Hi Bob - long time no talk! Actually, it's a tune I've loved since I heard Stan Getz's version years ago and I've played it on standard guitar for a long time so it just fell pretty easily into place by ear on C6th lap. |

Esquivel? Funny how people hear different things than one intends. I was thinking Joao Gilberto's trademark no-vibrato sound. BIAB unfortunately doesn't give you anywhere near that beautiful, breathing, Brazilian rhythm feel that can be SO perfect that, when it's in the pocket, almost any meoldy can practically float over it.
Kay - nice version of Ipanema! It's too beautiful a melody and chord progression to deserve its current lounge/kitsch associations. Crystal Waters did a keyboard-driven, dance club version circa 1996 that really made me see the song in a fresh new light. There's a clip here ....

Thanks, I did listen to the Crystal Waters clip, agree it is gives a new light on the tune and a 1990s-style mix, giving the accompanying instruments equal footing with her voice...the garage band influence? My favorite Ipanema would have to be the Stand Getz version...
Here is "Bossa Sol", a tune written by Steel Guitar Forumite Charlie McDonald of Lubbock TX which we developed together a couple of years ago (he did all the backgrounds and I did the lead on B11th tuning). Kind of abstract, building to a tension resolved by an E7th chord around halfway. We created about 4 mixes and after a long period of deliberation settled on this one. Love it or leave it?

Agreed. For my money, Stan's solo on the original recording with Astrud and Joao Gilberto and Jobim is one of the all-time greatest in recorded history.
Yours & Charlie's was an interesting experiement. The clave acccent feels wrong for Bossa Nova somehow. |
