Oh yes, it's happened to me. There is nothing better than the sting of embarrasment to make you do better next time. Plus you probably sounded much better than you thought you did. Make your next attempt ASAP.

you mean like playing a big show, KNOWING all the songs and solo's like second nature , with the main act band standing on the side of the stage in anticipation of Steel/Tele solo's and when it comes time to play...

it's like you've never sat behind the Instrument ever in your life ?

Fumbling, wrong string grips, out of tune, notes from a different planet...

I would submit that this has happened to me Sad

Historically these things happen due to exactly what you stated, you are there to do a show but have zero prep time.

The last big show we did the main act stayed on the BIG stage tinkering with there own monitor system right up until 10 minutes before the show started. We had to set up and be ready to play in basically 10 minutes or less. Then the stage monitor feeds didn't work because they never tested the House system so when we started playing we were basically 6 players on stage with no ears.

We played, we flubbed and yes, my brother told me we sounded great...he's always been a nice guy..

I wouldn't worry about it much, these things happen and the one thing you can count on is it will probably happen again. Smile

Earths rotation didn't stop, it may have blipped, but it didn't stop.

Nah, never happened to me, except that time in.................
and, oh yeah, that time at.............
oh, and the time that I forgot my bar, and then there was the time that........

Well, that takes care of the first years worth of goofs and mishaps, should we go on to the others?

Bill, it happens to EVERYONE of us at one time or another. Don't get down and out about it. Learn from it, prepare as best as you can for the next show, and keep picking!

Good luck Very Happy

I start the song in B flat then after the second verse modulate up to C. After the first verse I was able to clean it up a bit. I noticed I had a awesome tremlo effect going on and realized my left hand was shaking out of control. Now I know how Hughey gets that effect Razz I don't regret doing the show. It was an experience that I needed.I knew I wouldn't win and really didn't want to, I just wanted to support the cause. Our talent shows have not been doing to good the last two years. There were only 8 in the adult division.

Grow a large moustache or beard in time for next year's show and they'll all talk about how much better you sounded than that guy who played last year. Wink

Good advice, Jimbeaux. However, ever since the inner lable on "Four To The Bar", it won't work for you. Surprised

WOW! From your comments Tony, I'd swear you must've been at a recent show that I'd played! This thread is coincedently timely for me. Just the other night I was discussing this exact thing.

I'll work my fingers to bone working out my parts. Just as Tony referred to, I could play them inside and out, and in my sleep without thinking about it. But then comes the gig....and, "Fumbling, wrong string grips, out of tune, notes from a different planet..." Embarassed. Yep. Been there more times than I'd like to admit! There was one time when the sounds coming out of the steel were so ridiculus that it made me start to laugh almost uncontrollably! But then again, there are times were nothing goes wrong. (You know of course, that usually only happens on a slow night with a small crowd in attendance! Oh Well)

If anything, there is some relief to know that this phenomena is not unique to me! WHEW!

I think what threw me off more than anything was my pedals being so far off the floor. My A pedal looked like it was Three inches off the floor and there was no way I had time to reset them. And the two strings being out of tune did'nt help. It wouldn't have been so bad if I had been with a band then they could say the whole band stinks but this was all me doing it solo. Looking back it is funny, I've never liked doing Solo's even with a six string, which I actually do know how to play. No I had to do it with a Pedal steel.. Stupid, Stupid........Stupid.
I actually did get a good response from the crowd, but I think it was because I had my Security clothes on and was packing a Model 27 Glock, They were afraid not to. Wish you,all could have been there. we all need a good laugh now and then.

Bill,
Don't feel bad. Let me tell you one.
In '89, I was playing the Pro rodeo in El Paso, Texas. They rolled us out to the middle of the arena on a rickety flat bed, fold down trailer. It was February, indoors,...all metal building, so cold that a certain part of a witches anatomy would'nt make the top ten list. The fiddle player was a little too animated for that particular stage,...and when my amp fell over backwards, the resulting crash could be heard deep into Mexico. It took several seconds for the sound engineers to pinpoint the cause of what sounded like an F-14 tearing through a pie tin factory. There were probably 4 to 5 thousand folks in attendance, All with their hands cupped over their ears. To make it worse, There were a handful of guys competing in the bareback riding, and bull riding, that I knew from my rodeoing days. A few seconds later, I had to rise alone, and reset the amp, leaving no doubt who the culprit was.

If that ain't enough, I probably still hold the record for the biggest "klinker" at the Opry.

If trying to show off for a steel playing friend counts, then I done it again last night! Whoa!

A good friend, and steel player showed up at our gig last night and true to form I just had to show off with some 6th stuff I'd been working on and doing pretty good in rehearsal.

Just when I thought I had it going my way it went to H@#$ in a hand bag! Laughing

I just blamed it on the bass player and shrugged it off! Laughing But then that didn't work, she just gave me "that" stare! Oh Well

I loved being handed NEW STAGE CHARTS at sound check,
most a minor third from ANY of the versions,
that I had prepped for over a few months.

And then being faced with dozens of line dancers;
to make my night complete.
