I just looked at the pictures of Bobbe's new steel guitar.
I noticed it has 2 pickups on each neck.
I wander if both pickups work or the front pickup is a dummy pickup to stop hum?

I suspect that Bobbe might want to give the whole low down but when I saw his guitar, both pickups worked.

T.C.,
That's kind of what I figured. I was just curious.

I have thought about trying to mount a small dummy pickup in the housing cavity to cancel out hum on single coil pickups.
I don't know if that's been tried or not.

He will probably come along later and tell us all about it.

It looks real beautiful. In addition to the unusual 2 pickups per neck, it just has 7 floor pedals.

Here's the link

I can't wait to see Bobbe's evaluation of this guitar. It'll be well worth reading. The solid tuner head assembly could make a difference to the sustain of the guitar one way or the other.

Single raise, single lower? Am I seeing that right? It's obviously for someone who knows what he wants and knows they aren't going to change it.

Two of the pedals work both necks, so technically it has 9 pedals, like all my personal guitars.

Where does this single raise and lower idea come from? It is infinite raise and lower.

Like any guitar, the pedal setup can be changed by anyone that knows how to change a tire on their car, whoops, I know this still leaves a lot of folks out.

This is a high end guitar that is worth the asking price. More than just another "pretty face".

As for the two pickups, this is the only way to get the "out of phase tone" that Chet Atkins, Merle Travis got and the famous old Jimmy day tone he got on the Ray Price cut of "Crazy Arms" and "Heart Aches by the Number". Some really incredible different tones are available with the correct pickup spacing. (Unlike the Fender Stringmaster).

When time permits, I'll give a video demo on my web-site of these sounds. This guitar will also be at the St.Louis show in the "Jackson" booth. My set is at 11:45 AM Saturday, hope to see many of you there.

Buddy did this many years ago on one of his guitars (it may have been his basket weave 12 string).

In addition to wiring them out of phase, the pickups can also be wired in series. This would be a big fat tone, but useable for some nevertheless. With Bobbe's monika (name) on the front this guitar has to be a keeper so he must be impressed with it.

One thing in its favour is that the Jackson designers haven't produced a clone of other modern pedal steels. This one has some very radical design points worthy of inspection. It will be interesting to see if any of these ideas are picked up by other manufacturers in the next few years.

Ron, you have to be kidding, no, not even close.
An "A minor seventh" tuning on the inside neck with 5 pedals and 4 knees.
E9th on the outside neck, 4 pedals and 4 knees.

How are the pickups wired? Exactley like the Gibson Super 400's of yesteryear. Yes, both can be on at the same time.

Bobbe - George Redmon (no relation. .not spelled the same) posted some pics quite some time ago of the Whitney I built for him back in 1988. His pics included shots of the underside. Check the Forum archives as it was quite a while ago.

Bobbe, that GFI Expo clip was very cool. Good dialog, too. Almost makes me want to switch from a U12 to a D-10...almost. Smile

Can't wait to hear that Jackson clip, my friend. Come on, blow our minds!! Whoa!

Thank you Mike.
The Jackson clips will have to wait until Thursday, We are improving the breed even more, (More innovative ideas). David Jackson will get it back to me this coming week.
Also, look for it in St.Louis in the "Jackson Booth".
The double pickup feature is a killer the unique way they are wired up.
