There will be something new at the HSGA Joliet convention this year.
As you may have noticed, the dulcet sounds of the Hawaiian steel guitar
are not as prevalent on the airwaves as they once were. Only a few short years
ago it was easy to find Hawaiian steel guitar music on the radio, TV and in the movies.
People heard the music, liked it, and wanted to learn how to play the instrument.
Instruction on the Hawaiian steel guitar was easy to find in all the major cities
of the world.
Lately, on the radio, on TV... well you know... do I have to elaborate? I didn't think so.
On Thursday evening October 11, 2007 at the HSGA Joliet convention Chris Kennison (forumite)
will offer a free seminar in beginning Hawaiian Steel guitar using the C6 tuning.
Chris is an experienced steel guitar instructor. He is the steel guitarist for the Colorado based
band "Book 'Em Danno" and most recently the steel guitarist for Doug Kershaw "The Ragin Cajun" .
Chris will teach basic left and right hand technique, bar handling and send you on your way with
a basic song under your belt (fingers).
One of the goals of the HSGA is promoting the art of the steel guitar. By
offering free classes we are in effect "growing our own" steel
guitarists (and helping to keep the conventions and organization alive for years to
come).

An even greater idea would be to video it, video it very well with equally good audio instruction and post it all here for the whole world to have access to and benefit by.
THAT would generate lot's of new interest.

I agree Ron... but we kinda, wanna, hope-tah get more people attending the convention. And we would really like more people to think about joining the HSGA. More members means more opportunities, more ideas, more music, more conventions and live performances.
And we also want to give our attendees a little extra something for the cost of their admission ticket and also thank them for traveling long distances to be with us.
Ron, you are a big promoter of the live outdoor jams in Honolulu - the ones that Derrick Mau, Bobby Ingano and Jeff Au Hoy are a part of. If you film some of these jams, get the musician's permission and get the video to me, I wil gladly post it on the HSGA website.

I'd be more than happy to do that, Gerald, unfortunately I'm out of working video cams, and tomorrow night will be another missed opportunity, as Derrick and the usual suspects will be providing Chinatown more killer Hawaiian music, with duelling steeler's, just like the last 1st Friday doin's.
I think the A/V'ed steel lesson's would be a tremendous attraction for gathering new masses for the HSGA. Do it well, and with some simple promotion, you may have to fight the mob back. |

This is a great (and long overdue) idea, I thought it strange that the Midwest Uke Fest had the steel guitar class, but the HSGA/Joliet convention didn't.
The 'learning by watching someone play' idea only goes so far. |

2007 is the perfect time for you to make your debut performance at the HSGA Joliet convention!
You could hitch a ride with Rick Aiello. Tell ya what... I'll buy you lunch one day and maybe even a drink of your choice at the Saturday night luau.
