Hi, I am going to replace the Lollipop tuners on my Fender D-8 Dual Professional.

I am planning on selling the 12 good Lollipop tuning machines.

I plan on cutting Slots in the Tuning Pan anyway, as both tuning pans have one Slot cut already, so this is not an issue.

With the Buttons on I will need to be extra carefull not to nick them while cutting slots to take them out.

On the other hand I am not sure of the best way to remove the Lollipop buttons from the good tuners.

Are the Buttons just Pressed on ?
Are they soldered on ?
Are they Keyed in any way?
Are they easy to put back on after they have been removed ?

How would you want them if you were buying them ?

With the Lollipop buttons OFF, ready for installing ?

Or, with the Lollipop buttons on, as compleate tuners ?

The sooner I can decide how to proceed the sooner these good Lollipop tuners can find new homes in restorable Dual Pro or Stringmasters.

Any input will be of great help.

Fred

I'm going to do the same thing Fred. The tuners seem to be soldered to a copper looking plate, which is also soldered to the tuner pan. A big soldering should get them loose. I'm not a purist enough to want to fight the tuners down the road just for appearances. Like you, I have only one neck with the old tuners, and the tuner pans were slotted when I received the instrument.

I removed one years ago. They are pressed on. What I did was to protect the shaft and clamp on a long nose vise grip. Then I used 2 screwdrivers and pried it off putting pressure against the vise grips. You could probably just shim the gap and not use a visegrip.

Hi Bill
You wrote;

The Tuners will be compleate, all parts there, working fine.

The question I posted is ;

A) Would you prefer them with the Lollipop Buttons still on them, where you would have to use them on a Slotted Tuning Pan, or pull the Buttons off yourself to install on a stock, non-slotted Tuning Pan.

Or

B) Would you prefer them with the Buttons off so that you could install them into a stock non-slotted Tuning Pan and then put the Buttons on last.

Hi Fred,

For resale, because I think they would appeal to the most people, my vote would be;

B)... prefer them with the Buttons off so that you could install them into a stock non-slotted Tuning Pan and then put the Buttons on last.

That would then make them easy to re-install because all you have to do to install them, after the old ones are removed, is put them in place and either press on the new buttons or soldier or maybe even glue them on. These are the buyers that don’t want to mess with an original guitar and would be willing to spend the most $ IMO.

BUT!...use a large soldering iron to get them off. It is much easier than pulling them off. As long as you can get access to one or have someone else do it for you. And this way you will not risk putting any marks on them.

That's a BIG IRON Cool

Hi, I will take some pictures of the tuners, before and after removing them, within the next few days. I will remove the Buttons to take them off the existing pans, and I will reply to all emails after I have the pictures of include in the email.
Thanks for all your interest.
