When I worked for Gary P. Nunn, we opened the show with "Panhandle Rag".

When I subbed occasionally for Denny Mathis at the Fiesta Texas theme park several years ago, we closed the "Classic Country" set with "Remington Ride".

For many years, we would open the second set with "Nashville to Bakersfield", which I got from the old Winnie Winston/Bill Keith book back in the 1970's.

I play in two bands. The country band that I play steel in never does any instrumentals, and the only time I get to play one is when an elderly couple come in and request steel guitar rag.I also play guitar in a band that does Soul/R&B,and some pop things,In that band I start the night with a version of the Steely Dan song "Do It Again".I start the second set with an instrumental version of "Layla" The country band is the only one that I've ever played in that doesnt call any instrumentals...Strange Confused Confused Confused

Jerry -

Don't recall ever opening a set with a steel instrumental (why give the audience even more time to use the rest room?) but "Sleepwalk" always gets people on the dance floor.

Hrach -

How are ya?

Sneaky Pete began his pro career in music playing Cannonball Rag as his first tune; years later he'd still use it as the opener for many Flying Burrito Brothers shows. It's spectacular, enexpected - and darned near impossible to duplicate.

We will play an instrumental during a set, but we seldom open or close with one. We play things like "Panhandle Rag","Take the A Train","Silver Bells","Lady be Good"

Many years ago when I was a college student at Mississippi State University, I heard Cowboy Copas in Columbus. The show opened with the "Oklahoma Stomp." I do not recall the steel player but it was an exciting way to begin.

When I was a kid, living in Pa.; I used to look forward every night to hearing Speedy West's Instrumental “Truck Drivers Special”, on the all night Country Music Show heard on WCKY, Cincinnati, OH. I can't remember the DJ's name, but; I think it was Nelson King!

On the NBC-TV Show, we used Don Helms' "Corn Crib", I believe it was. On other performances, we've used "Red Skin Rag", "Texas Steel Guitar"; "Texas Playboy Rag"; and many, many others.
