Very Happy Got a phone call this morning from one of my steel guitar heros, Dicky Overbey. I have been concerned about his health. Dicky told me he was doing good, except for a injured hip. The hip got hurt loading horses at night. Dicky told me Rick Price was playing for Jake Hooker. Dicky lives 350 miles south of Jake Hooker and I think the driving each week was difficult. Dicky kept telling me how great Jake was on the upright bass, and how he could sing all night. I told Dicky Jake should be a big star in Nashville, and played everyday on the radio.
Dicky is working with Amber Digby, and Darrel McCall, and Johnny Bush some. We talked about our old friend Earnie Reed, currently with Mel Tillis on fiddle. We talked about our old friend in Joplin, Dewayne Boman. Dicky and I both have played for Dewayne at different times. Dicky did 2 years for him at the Paint Stalion Club. I was telling Dicky about my new ROCKABILLY CD. I told Dicky what seemed to work best was a raw Ralph Mooney sound, because I was breaking new ground. Dicky laughed and said everyone thought Waylon was crazy when he hired Ralph Mooney. No one thought that combination would work, but it worked great. Dicky is on the top of my list, I simply love his approach to the E9th neck. What a great guy. Dance Halls and real country music, with steel guitar, is still being played in Texas.

Hello Keith;
I agree with you also about Dickey..
What a hardcore honky-tonk country picker he is!!
He plays some of the prettiest music i have ever heard come from a pedal steel guitar.
One of my heros also.
I am sure glad he is still picking.I never tire of hearing his music on CD's...Ron

We need to turn the TWANG up a little

It's not what you play through, it's what you play through it.

They say that tone is all in the fingers...I say it is all in your head Smile

the value of friendship. Old friends shine like diamonds, you can always call them and - most important - you can't buy them.
