Does anyone know anything about this version of the song, personnel, year, etc.? It sounds great and I'd love to hear more from this session if it exists.

I have a cd titled "The Very Best Of Noel Boggs," with this track on it, but it has very little info. No track dates or personnel. Probably not all from the same session. Great stuff though, including a beautiful version of "Tenderly."

For what it's worth, I place this recording in the era of the late 1950's. It sounds to me like Noel's olde Four neck Fender and the Fiddler sounds like Wade Ray........? I don't think it was Hank Penny's band and feel certain it was NOT Spade Cooley. That break on the fiddle is very strong and I hear some elements that might be traceable to
...........gadd, the name escapes me. He used to play with the orginal Texas Playboys.
Hope that might help in some small way......

Sorry to give the answer from a young punk like me Wink, but the fiddle player was Bobby Bruce. Bobby's real name is Bobby Berg.

Muddy Berry, drum legend in SoCal, was on the pots and pans, and Charlie Morgan (from Andy Parker and the Plainsmen) was the guitarist.

Noel recorded it more than once and it was something of a signature tune for him. The version Herb refers to is the original Columbia recording:

December 1953 Radio Recorders, 7000 Santa Monica Blv.,Hollywood, CA

STEELIN‘ HOME Columbia 21220
DAY SLEEPER Columbia 21220
MAKE BELIEVE HEART Columbia 21274
HOW LONG Columbia 21274

The material on the "Very Best of Noel Boggs" CD was done quite a bit later (early 60s??) and was originally released on Shasta. Man, does that CD have the classic Fender tone or what!!!!

I have an Noel Boggs album somewhere that I haven't listened to in years. It has organ on it and Neil LaVang is the guitar player. So maybe there are at least three versions???

If you're referring to the Shasta sessions, Noel recorded the tune with fiddlers Billy Armstrong, Harold Hensley, and Norm Whistler. I used to see all those fellows around LA in the 60's.

Herb, happy someone remembers Bobby Bruce. He was very kind to me when I was a kid; using me whenever he could on his personal gigs. cc

Thanks for all the info, everyone. Yeah, that fiddle ride is extraordinary, too.

I have a Columbia 45 RPM, 4-21220 (RZSP 10682) "Steelin' Home" -Instrumental-Boggs- by Noel Boggs and his Day Sleepers. Flip side is 4-21220 (RZSP 10683) "Day Sleeper", Vocal with string band Acc. -Boggs-Laboe- by Noel Boggs and his Day Sleepers.

This might be one recording that is referenced in this thread.

This one is in my MP3 collection.
