OK all of you convention goers from the SGF, let's hear your highlights in more detail.
One newsworthy event was seeing some youth at the convention. One steel guitar player Tim Filson (in his 20's) from Nashville, Tennessee, was a first timer. He played some nice Hawaiian songs on a D-8, Dual Professional Fender. He has been playing steel about 6 years and plans to return next year. It is great to see a young man turning to Hawaiian steel playing even though he is in the heartland of Country Western music.
Our kudos go out to Howard R, who brought a one and only custom made Fender steel made especially for Jerry Byrd. Howard gave a nice talk about the guitar and then L.T. Zinn demonstrated the guitar.
Dick Sanft on talking story night talked about his life. He was born in Tonga and grew up in New Zealand where he started to play the Hawaiian steel guitar. He was influenced early by Dick McIntire. He moved from New Zealand in 1959 to Phoenix Arizona where he played with the Dick McIntire group after Dick passed on. He was hired by Disney World after giving them a steel guitar demonstration of his abilities. He stated, "I played for them around 3 P.M. one day and they asked me if I could start that evening at 6 P.M. He said, 'But all of my stuff is in San Diego.'" Long story short, he started his 18 year career with Disney World that day and retired about 6 years ago.
OK this is my first contribution, but let's now hear your comments.
Aloha,
