Randy, thanks for sharing those photos with us. I still remember you and I sitting at the table in Nashville with Jeff Newman at the jam the night before his accident. That memory will stay with me forever. You are the real deal. You are an inspiration.

Randy, for the few of us who don't know who is in them - can you caption the pictures? I know most probably have no trouble recognizing these players (I'm assuming they're steel players) but those of us who are distanced from the stylistic norm might not have a clue.

Jim, the players are in the order of the pics:

1. Buddy Charleton
2. Tom Brumley
3. John Hughey

Randy, it must have been a great experience to have seen those guys live during your formative years. To have met them must have been especially inspiring. It must have really fuelled your passion for pedal steel.

My dad would pick Buddy up at the hotel and bring him to the house. He'd show me things on my guitar then we'd have a big dinner. Junior Prunada told me that in all the years he worked with Buddy the only time he saw him leave and go with someone was in Tulsa with us.

The picture with Tom was taken at the Womens Building at the Tulsa Fairgrounds. It was a dance that held around 2500 people. When Tom found out I played steel he got a chair from backstage and set it beside him on stage, then had me sit beside him the whole night. (A four hour dance!)

With John it didn't matter where they were or how much security was posted, I managed to get backstage somehow. One time I remember security wouldn't let me back so I wrote my name on a note and someone took it to John. Directly John came to the door and took me back. It was a lot easier to figure out how he played those licks from the side of the stage than from the "Bob Ucker" seats. Very Happy

Randy, my friend.
Great photos! You certainly were a well-dressed young man back in those days. Smile

Not that you aren't today! Judy chose well. Wink

I would be very proud of these photos. I appreciate getting to see them. I never had the pleasure of meeting Buddy, but I knew Tom Brumley in the early 70's when I lived in Bakersfield, loaned him an amplifier one time. I met Mr. and Mrs. Hughey at the NTSGA meetings and jams. Three very talented players and really fine people.

When is your new CD going to be on the market? I am really looking forward to it. Alan

The new CD will be ready by St. Louis. I've been moving at a snail's pace but enjoying every minuite of it. I'm almost sorry to get it completed because now I don't have anything to work on.

Those are great memories Randy. I need to get more pictures with you guys so I can look at them when I get too old to play. It's wonderful that we have such a great steel family of super nice people. Love, Buck & Mitzi Grantham
