If you were in the market for an 8-string lap steel what brand would you buy? Also, I would be interested to know if anyone has one for sale.

How much money do you want to spend? What kind(s) of music do you want to play?

It does depend some on your needs. For my money, if you're playing with good temperature controls or in stable weather, there is nothing like a metal bodied guitar for tone. Excell and Sierra are both terrific. Excell is available in short scale. Sierra is not.
I have been known to play quite a bit in unstable temp conditions. Wooden bodied guitars stay in tune much better. I currently have a Remington. I had a Chandler RH-2 which was also good at staying in tune. Chandler makes a guitar they call a studio 8 which I'll bet does the same. Remingtons and Chandlers also have great tone. Remington is available with legs and at either 22 1/2 or 24 1/2 scale. No legs with Candler and a standard 23 scale.
Georgeboards I can only speak of by reputation. But I have to say that their reputation is as good as any. They are also wooden bodied guitars.

Felix,

Your ears should be the final judge. What sounds good to one person may not sound great to your ears.

What amp you're using too can make a good steel sound bad, or make it come to life.

Try before buying.
If it's 8 string vintage steels you're looking for, you can't go wrong with Fenders. It's hard to beat the old vintage stuff.

I have a Gold Tone six string that I'm very satisfied with and wouldn't hesitate to buy their eight string version if I was wanting an eight string.

Re: The Goldtone 8 string lap steel.

Although Goldtone has these 8-stringers in their on-line catalog, I've never seen one for sale.

I wrote to Goldtone to ask about availability, but they never responded. Maybe just too good to be true.

I recall a convention whereby there was a student guitar for sale. The purchaser asked Jerry to try it just to be sure it was ok. Jerry's brief touch on that cheap guitar brought out amazing beauty. Proved to me, it's all behind the finger picks.

I had a chance to play a Gold Tone eight string lap steel at Music Folk in St. Louis, MO when I was out there earlier this month. It's a fine sounding and playing lap steel from my limited time with it. The string spacing is narrower than the six string model, as would be expected, but it was a good little lap steel.

Remember; you get what you pay for.
I had a (will not name)2000.00 dollar non-pedal steel that sounded like a pedal steel and had some building problems with it.
With a Georgeboard; you get what you pay for> meaning; it is has lifetime warrantee and built to play and sound like a non-pedal steel in a very authentic way. The wood that George uses alone; is worth more than most out the door non-pedal steel sold today.
George's details to precision is un-surpassed and the accuracy to playability and sound; is

Hi folks, I must say, several years ago, I took a chance on (an unheard of by me,) D8 console built by George Piburn called "Georgeboards". I have never regretted it. Although it may seem a bit pricey, as compared to some of the "stuff" available out there, the tone, workmanship, playability, looks etc. have made it well worth while! I have to agree with Mr. Davis, "you get what you pay for."

Do yourself a favor, buy a Rick Aiello cast lap steel. The only question you will have is; "Why didn't I buy one earlier?" Rick has one for sale.

I decided to try something new so I bought the new 8-string lap steel made by Ryan Rukavina. There was a post concerning his custom made lap steels a few weeks back.
