Someone emailed this question to me and I thought I would ask the Forum since I have no clue.

Does anyone know of any aftermarket/replacement tuners that will work in an 8 string 50s/60s Fender Stringmaster tuner tray? I have the tray, but I need the tuners. Either four-to-a-side on the bar, or individual tuners that I can use will do. I have tried Kluson/Fender vintage style single tuners but the gear/post spacing is wrong and they won't sit straight in the groove.
Tuners are the very last piece of the puzzle needed in my quest to build a replica Stringmaster. I have found all the other parts that are mostly NOS.
I've ckeced with all parts and others and no one currently makes a replacement for those tuners.

Matt emailed me as well.
Since Stringmasters have shot up in price over the last 3 years, it's no longer profitable to part them out.
So unfortunately for people in need of the tuners, they no longer pop up for sale on eBay.
Now he's thinking of petitioning some companies to make them.
We tried that before without success, but I told him if he was going to try it again I'd help him if I could.
He seems quite determined, so you just never know. |

Maybe this will help you.
On the late model, 1970's vintage Stringmaster, the tuning machines sitting in the pan were Fender "F" Kluson DeLuxe individual machines, with the cut housings to fit a Telecaster. They set in there perfectly in that vintage horn. Maybe you could find replicas of those pegs and see if they'll work.

I had a 70's Deluxe 8 and these tuners are sill being sold on many web sites. So anything after 1970 is easy to replace and it's possible that the way these lay out (they are individual) they may also fit the older guitars. I have not heard of anyone that has tried. Many folks do not know that fender went to the individual tuners and they are not screwed in or fixed in. They just fall out and are a super easy replacement. The tuning pans of the 70's look a lot like the 50's - 60's to me. |

| After reading this,I looked at the mandolin tuner spacing, and it's identical to my Dual Pro Fender spacing, so in the event that there is no other way possible to fix them, at least the guitar can be made playable. I use mando tuners for some lap steels. |

So do I. They're great for hand-built instruments where you drill the holes yourself, but one small warning to look out for; not all mandolins have the same machine-head spacing, so measure the spacing first before ordering. Most parts suppliers, like Stewart-MacDonalds, show the dimensions on their web-sites. If not, I've found them very helpful in supplying information via email.
Oh, and don't forget that you want tuners for a C or A mandolin, NOT an F mandolin.    |
