Hey everybody - Tim here from central Virginia. I've been lurking for awhile and finally joined.
I started playing steel in 1977 - alas, I stopped in 1978 as I tried to learn on my own and just didn't get it. I've always worked in music, currently playing bass in Richmond with The Chicago Cy Band and in Myrtle Beach with Big Bam Boom (feel free to Google either). However, I've always regretted dropping the steel and thought, "Hey, so I've lost thirty years? So what?" Thirty years, sheesh...
Anyway, I bought a steel (Carter D-10) in January and made a very clever move - I started studying with Buddy Charleton. I look forward to making that almost two-hour drive every third week. He's a great guy, and it's just a clinic to listen to him noodle as I'm setting up my guitar (he tells some pretty cool "road" stories, too). I'm very happy with my progress and have even gigged on it twice with Big Bam Boom - just simple fills and solos on Buffett tunes, but at winery festivals in front of a thousand drinkers! I'm gonna play steel with him at Margaritaville in MB in August.
OK, great to be part of this community! |

Welcome Tim. This a great place to learn.
You most certainly made the right move by getting lessons from a pro. I had to learn the hard way because there are no steel guitar instructors within 600 miles of my place. |

Les, I usually don't see Billy. The lesson room is at the opposite end of the "complex" from the repair room, where Billy is usually hard at work. But yes - he can play. His CDs with Buddy are quite good. _________________ www.slimstanton.com
