since my resonator is tuned high bass G (GBDGBD) my main lap steel is tuned the same for convience.
there are times when I could use a 6th in the tuning. what string could I quickly tune for the 6. and what would I need to bring it to?

Randy, just raise the low D up a whole step - to E.

Try tuning the middle D up one step to an E. That gives you an easy sixth. Cindy Cashdollar has a good explanation of this tuning on her expanded doughboard tape.
