This isn't one that I penned, but wish I had. It was written by a friend by the name of pablus who is the impetus behind an ensemble called The Crazed Mugs. The tune is called Limahuli, and according to the description on the website, pablus says:

Limahuli is a National Botanical Garden on the island of Kauai and inspired this pablus original to his one and only Amber Love Goddess. They walked in the mist together on their 7th anniversary - alone in the splendid tropical setting. Makana, the large mountain that many Haoles call “Bali Hai,” means “gift” and the stream that bubbles from its heights certainly makes it clear as to why. Kanekila is outstanding on his sweet steel stylings.

I'm not sure how outstanding I played, but pablus liked it, and I absolutely LOVE this song.

Just go to http://www.crazedmugs.com and click on the link that says THE MUSIC, and scroll down to Limahuli to play the song. The amount of reverb was intentional, and what pablus wanted for this song. Normally, I don't use much reverb, if ever, but it seems to work for this one.

Enjoy!

Excellent!

Only problem is that it's not contemporary Hawaiian music because of the lack of a Reggae beat. Rolling Eyes

Seriously, nice tune, excellent steel work.

Gerald, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Gary, that video is hard to watch, particularly the part about that dubious, uh... ahem... "spa" treatment. Bluugghhh... That same type of uber-development thing is happening here, too. I hadn't realized it was getting that bad there.

Got a little chill on that one, Todd. Very sweet.

Gary, you just saved me about $6000.00 of disappointment. Kaua'i was where my wife and I wanted to go next after O'ahu, but not any more. Now I can get that deck built with no regrets. Thanks for posting that, and that's not sarcasm.

Hey Todd,
Thanks for the great song. That was a beautiful steel part you came up with! (Stringmaster?) And real nice vocal by pablus...

Neat stuff.

Gerald, the tune also has a diminished chord... I don't think anybody over here knows what those are anymore.

Yeah you're right Jeff.

It's not just Hawaiian music, it's epidemic.

A lot of music today is just 1, 4 and 5 with an occasional 4 or 5 thrown in the mix.

Hey guys - thanks for the nice comments. Yeah, diminished chords are getting more rare lately it seems. They end up in a lot of pablus' tunes though. I like 'em.

Stephan - yes, that's a Stringmaster. I thought that type of tone would work for this tune. Super clean.... I pretty much play my frypans most of the time, though.

Not sure if anyone is a Jeff Berlin fan (bassist extraordinaire), but if so, check out the first tune called "My Mug Collection." Jeff lives here in the Clearwater, Florida area.

There's no steel in it, but some really nice groove, and great bass playing by a legend in the electric jazz bass playing world. It's just a funny tune about collecting tiki mugs and what they're used for. Those who enjoy rum drinks will probably get it better than those who don't.

I've even heard old blues songs like that.

I liked the cadences, the chord stucture and (not least) the recording quality and the combination of (very good) voice with steel backing. You may wish to consider entering this for HMA2008. There is a vast field, and you will gain great publicity.

Nice to hear of a new CD album featuring steel guitar...Could be the beginning of a steel guitar rennaisance??? Rolling Eyes

Hey guys -- thanks again, and glad you enjoyed it.

Kay, thanks for the HMA suggestion, but I believe it was already This was recorded actually in the summer/fall of 2005, but I'm finally just now getting around to mentioning it here. Embarassed I meant to about a year ago, but kept forgetting. I believe that the CD was actually nominated for an HMA in 2006 (forget which category).

It was recorded in pablus' (aka Paul Richardson) studio (Path Of Palms http://www.pathofpalms.com/) in Brandon, FL. It's an audio/visual production studio that does a lot of work with companies like Mel Bay, etc., and quite a bit of work with different church groups across the country and the world (pablus does a lot of travel for doing shoots, field recordings, etc). He's had some pretty heavy jazz cats record there, too.

Bob -- thanks! Actually, there is a new Crazed Mugs CD in the works that we hope to have done by fall. It has a lot more pablus originals on it, and I can't wait to get back in there to record. I didn't own the frypan when we did this last one, and I really can't wait to use it on some of these new tunes. I'll definitely post some more (and sooner) when we get them.

Oh, and Gerald -- it WILL have a Jawaiian tune on it! Pablus figures that way, it might actually get some airplay on stations like KINE or KCCN.

Very Happy
