Has anybody heard the Vince Gill Box set? - Four CD's of different musical themes.

His "Country Western" CD has Buddy, John H., and Paul F. There are some great solos all over this set.

Not to belittle the other two players one bit , I think Buddy's aproach is so refreshing!

One a couple of cuts I hear a real agressive attack then quick volume attenuation followed by a swell to increase note legnth.

Is this similar to what Curly Chalker did which is referred to as "string gutting"?

I have the CD set and for the most part it is pretty good. Make no mistake, this is about Vince, if you are looking for extended Steel playing this is not the place. I like all the tunes that all the Steel players play on but my favorite is the tune that Vince sings with Bonnie Raitt which has PF on the Steel.

Our band covers one of the tunes that Buddy plays on, I think it is called "The Only Love" , it's on the Country record. Nice traditional Steel playing on this one.

Bought the 4 CD set this weekend. 43 tunes altogether. CD No.3 is the good one. The set has Buddy Emmons, Paul Franklin, and John Hughey on it. Kinda neat to play "guess the steeler...".

The first track on CD 3 is kinda neat too, where the lyrics are comprised of intertwined snippets from a whole bunch of classic country tunes.

Ray,

The "Together Again" snippet on the 5 chord of the tune, "This New Heartache", you are reffering to, cracks me up. Gotta hand it to E. I love the intro too. Talk about melodic tension and its' resolution. I think I've figured it out and learned a whole other use for the chromatics in the process.

My impression of that record (Or I'd like to think)- it's Vince's response to the CM industry that trys to pigeon hole him. He's a versital guy no doubt. Ironically, I think his biggest strength is classic country western and he refuses to dillute it. Hence a four CD set, each CD with undilluted stylistic theme.

Good for us - he loves PSG.

We had a pretty good thread going on this album when it came out last October. You can read it below:
