After a lot of thought, I decided to give the Eminence Kappalite speaker with the neodymium magnet a try in my Steel King. I was finding it difficult to roll enough highs off, and the weight was getting to me. I know several Steel King owners have gone with the Black Widow and that is a good speaker too. I wanted to go lighter if I could. The amp used to weigh 63 pounds with the stock Eminence "JBL clone", and now weighs 47 pounds. [both weights without the wheels] Now the amp is manageable for me and it sounds great. The highs are no longer a problem. I bought my Kappalite from Tom Bradshaw who's building the new Webb amps and is putting Kappalite speakers in them. By the way, I know the Steel King is 4 ohms and the Kappalite is 8 ohms, but I don't notice any reduction in power or headroom. George |

I just ordered one of these from Tom earlier this week. It is intended for my Webb but now I've got to consider putting it in the FSK.
---Case for the Kappa in the Webb: I've never been impressed with this amp but it has very possibly never had the appropriate speaker in it (an EV, up 'til now) so it's possible that I can bring the Webb to life.
---Case for the Kappa in the FSK: George's post here.
So much tone. So little time. And money. |

I was told by a tech at Eminence, that the kappalite neodymium speaker was designed for a PA cabinet use, and at least this tech recommended against using it for my guitar amp. Although he didn't actually come right out and say why, or tell me not to use one. The fella at Evans amps told me the same thing when i asked him if he puts kappalites in his evans amps. He just about had a melt down and said no way. We have our neo's custom built, he wouldn't put a kappalite in any of his amp either? So i was thinking of putting a kappalite in my amps, but i think i will hold off for the time being. Just passing along what i was told so don't shoot the messenger...just trying to be helpful |

I tried one in my Peavey LTD, while it made the amp much lighter, it sounded "ok" at lower volumes but did not cut it for me at moderate to loud stage volumes. It put my 1501-4SB back in and everything was fine again. I'm looking forward to the release of the Peavey 15" 4ohm neo that uses the same basket as the 1501-4SB. Getting closer there Mike Brown? |
