What are the array of effects you guys use in your pedal steel rig?
Individual pedals? All in one unit?
Anyone using a boss pedal board that hold six pedals? Will it fit underneath your steel between your a,b,c pedals and volume pedal?
I'm thinking of the this:
Using reverb in my NV1000
Below pedals through the effects loop, volume pedal through amp.
*Boss BCB-60 Pedal Board
*Boss DD-6 Digital Delay Guitar Effects Pedal
*Boss DS-1 Distortion
*Boss CH-1 Super Chorus
*CS-3 Compression Sustainer
*Bobbe Seymour's "Bobro"
*Wah Pedal

How would you guys run this and in what order? Thanks

My main gigging steel is a D10 Zum, 5 and 8. My amp is a NV400. I use a delay petal, and the amp reverb. Nothing else.

Hi Todd,
All that list lost me already ! I use only the RV-3 on 1 guitar, which is digital delay & reverb mix, and shut off the reverb on the amp. On the other guitar which I leave set up at church, is the Dual Deltafex, a preset for steel which is again, delay/reverb mix and shut off the amp reverb. I can't speak for others, but I do notice that a lot of steel players keep it pretty simple without too much effects stuff. The famous greatest late Jimmy Day was a purist and used no effects at all. FWIW Cool

I use a TC M300 mainly for reverb and delay, but it has other effects I occasionally dabble with. I also use a Goodrich Matchbro for Dobro simulation.

I use a Korg A1 rackmount effects processor. I usually just use a slight delay (230 ms 8-12% mix) and reverb (1.7 sec decay 14-18% mix). There's one song (Luckenbach) that I use phaser on. Only play that song every once in a while. There are also a couple of songs I use distortion on, but for the most part I just use delay and reverb and I try to not use too much of either of those.

I would have to go with Reverb and Delay for a main staple , but also dabble in a lot of other effects also depending on the tune ...Sometimes distortion, with or without chorus....Sometimes a little compression mixed in ...Sometimes the Leslie effect ..It all depends ....Jim

Live I use a RV 3 with the mix barely turned on. If I use an amp in the studio, I go dry and if I go direct I use a small room reverb on just enough to keep sounding to dry and depending on the song I'll use delay, chorus and I've used a little phase shifter some.

I use either the Boss RV5 or Lexicon MPX1 reverb all the time. Occasionally I add in some stereo delay on slow songs or the Line 6 Roto-Machine or some distortion. In these cases I add the pedals just for recording a certain track, then take them right back out again.

In many combinations, I use:
Zvex Fuzz Factory, Fulltone OCD overdrive, Marshall Bluesbreaker overdrive, Maxon AD-900 analog delay, Demeter Tremulator, and EH Holy Grail. Sometimes there's an Ebow in there too.

Reverb from the amp. I have a Bo-Bro, Digitech Distortion Factory, and a Boss RT-20 rotary speaker simulator.

Guitar -> Distortion -> Bo-Bro-> 1 or 2 Nashville 400's. Rotary unit is connected to both post EQ circuits in the amps.

Boss RV-5 and DD-6.
Sometimes I use a pedal OD, but generally if I want that kind of sound I'll use a small tube amp and crank it up.

session 400 or super reverb, with visual sounds rt 66,compression & O-drive & reverb in various amounts I Never use the compression on the rt66 Billy Lee Fraser, the jury is still out on the 400 vs the super they are both usefull & differ greatly ,kind of 60's vs 70's

Here's my basic setup. Since this picture I have replaced the Auto Wah with a Behringer (EH Clone) Phase shifter pedal. The Auto Wah does not have enough headroom for steel. I go out of the phaser to a Digitech 2112 preamp/effects unit with several patches I use, mostly reverb with a little delay, and chorus. For a Country sound, I use reverb and delay only. I am in the process of building a custom pedal board to sit beside my volume pedal that will have an overdrive, a phase shifter, a chorus, and a reverb/delay pedal. I'll post pictures of it when I get it finished.

I had to pick 'other'. These days, I mainly use the reverb and distortion that are built into my Boogie amp, plus an Auto-Wah after the volume pedal and an H&K Rotosphere in the effects loop.

Sorry , I forgot to mention that I use a Hilton Sustain no matter which rig I use . I find it helps most when playing at lower volume. Thanks Rolling Eyes

I don't exactly consider the steel guitar black box an "effect". But it really is, at least in a certain sense. So I inadvertently lied when I voted "Reverb and Delay", since I use one very frequently. Probably many do the same, or use a Matchbox in a similar role.

It really depends on what I'm playing and my mood; if I want to go simple I use my POD XT and dial in whatever I feel like. Otherwise I might use something like (in order):

MXR Distortion + (mounted under the guitar where I can hit it with a knee)
Volume pedal (rarely used, sine I two-foot my Fenders)
Klon Centaur
Lovetone Brown Source
Way huge Green Rhino
ZVex Fuzz Factory
Korg G4 Rotary Emulator
H&K Replex, Mr. Echo, Ibanez Echomachine, Sireko tape delay, Ibanez Digital Delay, or EH EVO-1 Echo (usually any two of those)

Sometimes a Blue Hippo Chorus; Phase 90; Arion SCH chorus; MXR Micro Amp; ZVex Loop Junky.

It's a lot of stuff, but years of working out the sequence, George L Cables, a mix of power supplies and batteries have let me work it out with no muddiness, no noise - when bypassed you'd never know the stuff is there.

It most certainly is an effect. If you look at the waves of a track using the Black Box vs. without, you'll see the signal is compressed by the Black Box, which compression is what helps give the string separation. I'd never record without mine. You know, I've never tried using delay as I've attempted to be somewhat of a purist (like Dan, often with no reverb), but I'll have to give it a shot.

I use my DD-5 and the amp reverb.
Nothing else. I find less is more in most situations.
I found too many effects get lost in the band's mix.

These days I just use amp 'verb because I'm tired of looking for AC outlets and/or dragging around extension cords. We often have limited amounts of time to set up, and sometimes I find it time-consuming plugging in effects. Batteries are useless.....I go through them like wildfire, especially in units that have to generate repeats like the DD3.

I've even retired my "AC only" Goodrich LDR for the summer and have opted for a good old 120 pot pedal for my summer festival shows (that allow for almost no tinkering time). Now, I just need to plug in my amp - that's it. Having said all this, I recently bought an RV2 here on the forum. And that doesn't even have a battery option. Smile So I may just throw that in the pac seat and use it on gigs that have lots of AC/setup time - that's if the 'verb options are that much better than the Session 400 'verb.

If it's country or swing, I use the spring reverb that comes with the amp (Twin).

For metal/noise, I cascade a Prescription Electronics COB to a Stamps Drive-O-Matic XL and
a Glitch Computer, which I either use one at a time or in combinations. Then these go into a
Boss DD20 Gigadelay and then a Pigtronics Echolution.
