An exaustive SGF and google search for itty bitty tuners (aside from the usual suspects) has not proven fruitful, and I'm asking for forum help in knowing what is available today in super small locking tuners.
An SGF craftsman from about a year ago, posted an example of his home-made steel makin' skills, which included a round peg head utilizing tuners such as I'm seeking, but I can't remember the pertainent facts. |

I've been curious about these tuners since I first saw them over a year ago.
Been wanting to check them out in action. They certainly are neat and small.
Kinda looks like they are intended to be used with a locking nut and tremolo system that has fine tuners like a Kahler.
I wonder if they can tension and release the string over and over without breaking it at the sharp bend where the string is pulled downward into the barrel of the device.
Has anyone had any experience with these tuners? |

I like them. But my question is how can they achieve a 40:1 ratio without some kind of gearing down? |

The ratio is probably just the threads per inch of the tuning knob. There is a common metric thread that equates to 40 TPI |

The ratio is threads per inch, no gearing involved. I'm the round peghead guy mentioned earlier. My experience with these tuners goes like this: Unique? - yes. Conversation starters? - yes. Functional? well, marginally. The quality between individual tuners varied in the sets I received. (two six string sets) Some turned hard, some turned easy. You could tweak them with adjustments and graphite powder but I was never fully satisfied with the performance. That being said, the quality may have improved in the three years since I tried 'em. I replaced them with grover mini rotomatics. |
