You got Ray Charles' "What I Say" on the four bottom strings, and easy access to all the blues licks in the world. All IMHO of course...

A13 is one that's good for blues. That 1-3-5 on top puts you right in the middle of a ton of country blues. The dom7 on the bottom
is an easy retune from A6 and gives you (lo-hi) G-A-C#-E-F#-A-C#-E.
That E13 is very cool for blues, too. I'm tempted to try that one tuned down a full step to D13, just to able to do more slidin' around on that "E fret" for blues in E or A. Of course it's the same old deal-- gain some stuff, lose some other stuff...

I've used A6 with pretty good results. You have to avoid that F# string, except when it's used for other chord tones, but it's pretty easy to get what you need, especially when you're used to any type of "6th" tuning. That fifth on top is VITAL, IMHO...

| I also find that C6 works great for blues, listen to an audio sample of Jimmie Vaughns "hillbillies from outer-space" on amazon from the album "Family Style". Jimmie has the steel going through a leslie or chorus pedal to sound kinda like a B3 organ. T-Bone Walker stuff works out great on C6, you can throw the horn riffs in there no problem along with the blues soloing. Open G tuning will give you an instant country blues sound bite? |
