Topic: Replacement klusons for a D8 National |

I have a customer with a nice old D8 art deco national that needs the tuner buttons or machine replaced. I removed on and it looks like a long shaft. Does anyone have a suggestion.

Both tuner buttons and Kluson-style tuners are available from many sources, including Stewart-MacDonald and AllParts. That's one of the easier upgrades you can do to an older lap steel.

| I installed new grover machines heads on a double neck National a couple of months ago.remove the row of original tuners,Drill the holes to fit the Grover machine heads.Install the one screw in each machine head and your done.Now your guitar is no longer original but you have the best tuners available. |

| I had the crumbling buttons replaced on my Valco Tonemaster D-8 with Stew-Mac off-white plastic buttons, which made the guitar very playable. Buttons are slightly whiter than original, but otherwise looks stock. Could not find a Kluson-style tuner that had the larger diameter & longer shaft like the originals. |

Fred,
I recently did a Gibson with the Stew Mac ivoroid buttons. I think that you have to glue the ivoroid buttons as they don't melt the same way as plastic. I had to use a Dremel tool to slightly enlarge the holes to get them to fit properly, then epoxied them on. The project came out great... I really like the look of the ivoroid buttons.... |

Does anyone know where you can find 4-on-a-plate tuners for 8-string steel? I can't seem to find any that will work for my frypans. I thought maybe mandolin tuners, but the distance between each shaft is too small (24mm). According to the ones that are on there now, they need to be 29mm from middle of shaft to the next one.
Both steels have 4-on-a-plate tuners, but one of the steels needs to have them replaced. They don't have to be closed gear like these. In fact, I prefer open gear.
