Hello, all.

My name is Randal Smith, and I'm just so proud to be here. Greetings from Nashville. I'm new to the forum, but not new to steel. I bought my first one about 1972 from Duane Marrs at the old Sho-Bud store on Broadway here in Nashville. It was a student model Emmons, and the ugliest Exorcist pea-soup green you ever saw. Over the years, I've owned Fenders, MSAs, Sho-Buds, and one or two brands I don't remember. About ten years ago, I sold my MSA to buy a Taylor acoustic, which I still have and play. But, I haven't owned a steel until about a month ago, when I bought a Carter Starter from Bobbe Seymour. I thought about changing my name to Rusty Chops for a while, but it seems to be coming back, albeit slowly. Anyway, I'm looking forward to asking a million questions which, being the wonderful people you all are, I'm sure you will patiently answer. I tend to be a bit opinionated (say it ain't so!), so you'll probably be hearing from me on a variety of topics, some of which I actually know something about.

Seriously, I am glad to be here and glad to be back playing steel again. Can a paying gig be far behind?

Hi, Randall. I lived in Nashville myself from '72-'75. I traded a metal body round-neck Dobro to Bobbe Seymour for my first Maverick, and took it in to the Sho-Bud shop to upgrade the undercarriage and get an extra knee-lever. Shot had been out deer hunting and they were serving venison stew from a big pot up in the attic shop. I learned pedal steel from Charlie Gore, who still lives there I think. A couple years later I quit music for almost 25 years. I started up on pedal steel a few years ago. It gradually came back, and now I'm better than ever, but still a rank amateur.

Welcome to the Forum. I've learned a ton and met some great people by hanging out here.

I thought you were going to call yourself "a man of wealth and taste."

Welcome, Randall.

I worked on lower Broadway in the early 70's across the street from Sho-Bud (and Tootsie's) at Little Roy Wiggins "Music City" music store.

Hi Randal,
Welcome from Ontario Canada! Sounds like you and I are in the same boat since you can also call me Rusty Chops, seeing as I haven't played for 20 years. Then, as retirement set in, the interest was re-awakened.
Did I mention retired? I couldn't afford a new steel so I am trying my hand at building one. So far it's a "maybe".

You came to the right place.Everybody on here are so friendly and more than willing to share their knowledge. I know you will enjoy yourself immensely.

Thanks for all the kind words, folks. Much appreciated. Replies as follows:

Austin has powers? I knew Houston and Dallas were pretty powerful but I didn't know that about Austin. Actually, there's a 5-year old at church named Austin that can teleport. One second he's at the back of the sanctuary, blink your eyes and he's in the choir loft.
(I'm not really an AP fan, just like that line.)

As for being a man of wealth and taste, not really. If I was, I would have bought a Carter SD-10, or a GFI, or a Jackson, or a LeGrande, or a . . .

Sorry. Where was I? I got lost in thought and it was unfamiliar territory. Anyway, thanks again. I'm gonna go and try to knock some of the rusty off my chops. Later.

Randal,

Welcome back to the fold! Once steel gets into your blood, it kind-of stays there. Have fun mounting your comback!
