I have a metal body resonator, and it sounds good, but it's not loud enough to compete with drums and bass etc. Is there a good pickup available for a metal body?

I don't want to drill holes or cut slots, maybe I'm asking for the impossible?

Thanks;
Dom

I have both of these -- National-Lace pickup (several years old) and Lace Ultra-Slim Sensor (brand new). These are intended for metal-bodied resonators, and attach with a clear putty/adhesive that can be removed 100%. Both are pricey ($200, $150) and sound somewhat electric rather than acoustic, but have pretty good volume w/o feedback. I think that they have the same "guts" but the National version looks prettier, has been around longer, and has that National mystsique. Have used on a Johnson tricone squareneck and a Dobro Hula Blues (wood body). Not as loud on the squareneck, but that's because the pickup is further from the strings.

Dom, it is my opinion that there is nothing better for a reso pickup than a GHS Soundhole Mic. That is what I use and it picks up the natural tone of the resonator and you can get a lot of volume without feedback. I have had feedback problems with other pickups. The newer version has changed design slightly so you now need to attach the flexible goosneck to the preamp with velcro of something but that is simple. It is attached to the guitar by a stretch bungy type cord that has a small padded block that slides on it and the preamp has velcro that attaches it to the block. You can do a Google search for GHS Soundhole Mic and see it and it is under 100.00. I use it into a Boss acoustic EQ stompbox into a RV3 then into a Boss tuner stompbox which serves as an on/off switch when tuning. From the tuner I usually go to the board but you can use it with an amp.

I have a McIntyre pickup in mine. The connector mounts through one of the front body holes.
I've also had good luck with the little Audio Technica mini-gooseneck mics, the ATM35, the new number I think is ATM350. Clamps onto the cone cover, then position mic where you need it (and it stays).

I heard Keb Mo with a new National Tricone cutaway, and whatever pickup they are using in those, sounds great.
