I have a Flynn guitar that the late Harold Flynn built for me. I know it has a lot of Rusler parts, example the pedals have and "R" stamped on them. I would like to find out a little about the Rusler Co. I'm not familiar with it. I know Fred Layman bought all the parts and then he died so I was wondering if anyone knew who has them know. My guitar has the Zane Beck set up (12 strings)

Um, unless I missed some terrible news, I think Fred just sold the company and moved to Missouri but is very much alive and, I trust, kickin'!!

Gary,I'm pretty sure Chuck Back has them because my Desert Rose has Russ-ler pedals with the {R} on them.

Fred is very much alive and recently remarried after his wife passed away a few years ago. He is living in Springfield, MO.

Chuck Back purchased all of the parts, etc from Fred that he had purchased from the Flynn estate.

It seems the reports of his demise have been somewhat exaggerated. Wink Read all about it here:

Well I guess I really messed up about Fred. Rumors do get started. I worked on a show here in Pigeon Forge for 20 years and someone ask every night if I died. So I can relate.
Sorry Fred

Gary,

Really good to hear from you. Several years ago I had the privilege of catching your show and was very much impressed; not only with your playing but your singing as well. If you died on stage, it sure wasn't that night. Are you playing anywhere now?

Ol' Fred

Hi Fred
Great to hear from you. I appreciate the kind words. No I'm no playing anywhere. I left the show 3 years ago. I have a recording studio and that's the only playing I do these days.
God Bless

Pack to the original subject. Chuck Back bought the Flynn and Rustler companies. If you need parts just call Chuck at Desert Rose and he knows the whole story.

Two of the guitars on his web page are mine.

Thanks Joe for the info. The Desert Rose is a beautiful guitar. My daughter lives in Buckeye and also has a home in Avondale. We get out there at least once a year. Is Chucks shop there also?

Gary, good to see you on the Forum. Man, I miss hearing you play that 12-string Flynn steel with the Zane Beck set up..

Donna passed away June 17,'05 and the report may have become garbled. I moved back to your old stompin' grounds in Springfield MO in December '03. I am still working with steel guitars. Right now I have 8 in my work shop in various stages of completion or renovation. I have two new Flynns (a 12-string universal and a D-10 and a third D-10 in process, besides my personal D-10. Chuck Back (a great guy by the way!)gave me permission to use the brand name until I get these finished. After that I will still be working on steels, probably building som custom guitars under a different brand name.

Fred it is so good to hear from you. So sorry to hear about Donna. I'm glad you are still working on steels, wish you were closer I have been thinking about adding another floor pedal to mine. So is Chuck going to continue to build the Flynn? I still play my mine a lot in the studio, great recording guitar. A man gave me a Sho Bud Maverick yesterday and I'm going to see if I can fix it up a little and sell it. Well Fred again it's so good to hear from you.
God Bless
Gary
