I don't like to be fussy, but the oud is the direct ancestor of the lute, not of the guitar. They all have some common ancestor, I suppose - there are only so many ways to make a stringed instrument.

When the Moors rolled across Europe in the 8th century, they brought the oud with them. There were guitarlike instruments in Europe already, and Europeans started to use the tuning and wider fretted neck of those instruments on the oud-style body to make the European lute. (In Arabic, "an oud" is "al'oud"; you can see where "Lute" comes from).

It's also a contraction from the French- La Oud.

So (someone had to ask), does it make al'oud noise? Rolling Eyes

(p.s. where's the emoticon for "Groooaaaan" when you need it?)

John K.

Questionable as to what instrument came from what. If you do a websearch on the the history of both, some sites say the lute is from the oud and some say that both evolved from another instrument.
