Music Pro Insurance

I have three pedal steels and a bunch of other guitars insured for a number of years. One caveat, I've never filed a claim, so I don't know how they are to deal with. They have been around for a while and advertise frequently in music mags.
You can apply and do all of the communication via their website.

All of my equipment is covered under home owners. I had to have a seperate rider written, going into detail of age, value, etc, but no seperate policy was required. |

Read your policy carefully. There can be some screwy things in there. Some homeowners policies don't cover things stolen outside of the house or used for work. Some policies don't cover things stolen from cars. You may want to check with your local musicians union for some insights. Most band managment companies have a deal going for gear also.
I keep my gear insured all the time. I feel stupid sending in the check but not as stupid as I would feel without insurance if my gear was stolen. _________________ Bob |

Hi Terry, My experience from years ago (might be different today?) was that homeowners covers, but not if you play out for money! just hobby instruments would be covered. Ask an agent, they will answer your questions, I'm sure. |

I'd check that carefully. If you play ANY gigs for money Allstate's policy usually excludes coverage.
Almost all six-stringers I know (including me) have Clarion. They write policies specifically for musicians and their rates are decent. They are the most-recommended on the Fender and most other guitar forums.
What I said about Allstate (I've had Allstate homeowners and auto for decades) is true for most major carriers - they offer limited coverage for itemized "collections", but exclude "professional" coverage - and their definition is ANYONE who plays for pay, EVER.

Our homeowners insurance through State Farm covers all of the guitars, fiddles and even the steels. But my daughter's concert and celtic double harp are covered by a separate rider. Concert harp? Think the cost of four or five MSA Millenium steels. The celtic double you can get for just two Millenium (millenia?).

Dennis: Does your State Farm homeowners cover your equipment while you are playing out on a paid gig?
When I posed the question to my State Farm agent he pointed out in the policy that it did not. Therefore I have the separate policy which does.

I will offer my recommendation after 35+ years as an independant agent. Your homeowners policy will cover your intruments as long as they are "not" used as a business. Business would include any paid funtions. There can be some restricktions on away from home theft. The best way to cover is under an Inland Marine floater policy where you schedule the instruments by description and value. These can be written as individule policies or added as a rider to any homeowners policy. You also want to know if the coverage is on an agreed amount basis or actual cash value. All Homeowners coverage would be on actual cash value being replacement cost less depreciation. If you have instruments that cannot be replaced or collectors value you would want nothing less than agreed value, with value established by an appraisel. |
