Does anyone have further info on this 2 CD package by Andy Parker and The Plainsmen?
http://tinyurl.com/pnh5d
I just discovered it and I don’t know how long it has been available. It was compiled by Andy’s son Joe and contains 40 songs, of which only about 5 appear to be duplicated on the British Andy Parker CD of a couple of years ago.
$20 for the package. If this has been mentioned before, I missed it.
Steel players are Joaquin Murphey and Noel Boggs. The rest of the cast includes Harry Sims, Charlie Morgan, George Bamby, etc.
I am guessing a lot of this is from transcription material?
Has anyone heard it and can anyone comment on the sound quality, the accompanying liner notes, and especially on the Joaquin content????? How many songs have Joaquin? Extended solos??

Mitch,
I have been using this set on my show and it is wonderful. Most of the material is from Capitol Transcriptions and only three of the classic Coast records are on the set. The sound quality is fantastic! There are a total of 40 cuts with Noel Boggs playing steel on 6 of them and Joaquin Murphey playing on the three Coast items. There is lots of nice Harry Sims fiddle. Joe Parker, himself is a wonderful guitar player and really did his dad's memory well with the issue of this set. Again, there is only steel on nine cuts if that is what you are looking for. |

Mike:
Thanks for the response.
I would guess the 3 Joaquin tracks are either New San Antonio Rose, Along The Rio Grande, Throw a Saddle On A Star, or South? I can trace them to Coast 78 rpm discs.
I guess I will have to decide if the convenience of having the 3 songs on CD is worthwhile. The lack of steel on most cuts would probably indicate most of the songs aren't quite my style.

Mitch,
You hit the nail on the head! The three Coast items are "New San Antonio Rose", "Along the Rio Grande" and "South." The interesting thing is that "New San Antonio Rose" is supposed to be an outake.

There is a ten inch, on the Tops label that has alternate takes of all the Coast sides.
They are almost identical with the exception of Murphey, he plays totaly different solos.

Lee,
I know the ones that you mean. They are some pretty awesome cuts.
By the way, you played some pretty super stuff yourself on the Big Sandy CDs. My "Swingin' West" listeners world wide love them.
