I heard it was bad, but now after finally being able to get a copy, I am livid! GP announced last month that this was to be a fitting tribute to Sneaky Pete.
GP was notified that I was willing and available for an interview or any questions they might have. They never contacted me. The journalist??? Vincent Demasi had an entire month to do research and right from the gate, the first paragraph he states, Sneaky was a "native of Ohio". Wrong! South Bend, Indiana!
I am asking all forumites to email GP and let them know you are disappointed. I am writing a scathing letter to the editor and I am certainly going to call Chris Hillman, who called me a few weeks ago asking me if I was mad at him. Now, I know why he asked.
I think Sneaky deserves better than this embarassing
same-o-same-o. Thank you. |

I'd be livid also! And sadly, my experience in working for newspapers (!?) is that far too many *journalists* are lazy and disinterested in anything that exists outside of the little bubble that surrounds their own self-centered world.

Your dad was a great player, a great influence, and a great man who helped me in my career. Even filling in for me with the Jimmy Lawton Band... a low-pay gig he really didn't need at all... when I was moving to Texas and needed a sub desperately.

Can anyone hip me to a link to the No Depression article? I did a search, but no joy.
Cause I really don't want to read a 'review' by yet another music critic that doesn't know sh*t from Shinola. I never did like Guitar Player....
I'd be burned too, Anita. 
Hope you put your best writer's skills into a scathing diatribe against the madness. (Now that would be worth reading.)

I'll add that Vintage Guitar magazine did a long obit on Sneaky Pete, only to note that he was the one that played on most of "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"! I, and many others, wrote in to note that this was incorrect (as was the caption to a picture of Tom Brumley playing with Buck Owens noting he was playing a "Sho-Bud" instead of "ZB").....they did print one letter to the editor that pointed out the errors.

Did any of the articles mention his L.A./Seattle based rock band Sir Raleigh & The Coupons from '64/65...?
They once opened for the Beach Boys in Seattle, and evolved out of the Lazy X Club house band, the Norm Raleigh Band. Sir Raleigh & The Coupons also cut a few singles, all garagey Beatles inspired pop-rock numbers, and damn fine at that.

Anita,when I was a teenager my Mom used to get me a subscription to Guitar Player,and a gross of guitar picks every year for my Birthday,That's when it was a good Mag. these days I can go to Barnes,and Nobles and flip thru it in about two minutes...It might be a good one to train a parakeet with?Stu

I've always hated guitar player ! When I was a young snot nose kid,I always bought Guitar for the practicing musician because they had tablature every month. I always thought of GP as a publication for snobby jazz players(hey....I was just a kid)!  |

I never miss an issue of No Depression...it's my favorite magazine, music or otherwise. If anyone were going to get the story reasonably correct, it would be them.

Peter Blackstock and I used to be colleagues at the Austin Chronicle, though he was in editorial and I was in advertising. But he and Grant (Alden) are true music junkies for roots, traditional-style country, and Americana.
I was honored when Peter asked me to write the ND obituary for my pal Speedy West.
No Depression is one of the most well-written and edited music magazines in the world, regardless of genre or subject matter. Most forumites would be well served to subscribe.
