Many years ago I bought George Jones's first album on Starday containing the following songs ......Why, Baby Why, You gotta be my Baby, Ragged by Right, Yearning (with Jeanette Hicks), etc. Anyone know who the steeler was?
I know that Smiley has an autographed copy of this album....any help Smiley? |

If it's the first LP on this site, it has versions that were recorded in TX, so possibly Herb Remington. Jones cut versions of the same songs later in Nashville with mostly Jimmy Day or Buddy Emmons, except for the Too Much Water session which was Lloyd Green. |

I would guess Jimmy Day or Pete Drake on Starday, but that is just my guess.

This would be the Starday debut in '56, so it predates a lot of the Nashville session cats as a couple of people have mentioned, coz Starday was Texas based in it's early days.
As Jussie suggested, Herb Remington played on some material around this time, although Jimmy Biggars has been suggested for the earliest Starday sides that feature steel as part of the Western Cherokees.
(that's after Bobby Black and Pee Wee Whitewing were in the group) |
