Hey Joel-dude, welcome on board!!! Good to see you here, how's things in Chicago? Any naked psychobilly guys around there?? Scratchin' your head, huh? More like we were schratchin' ours watching you. |

No nude psychobillies here- that's in your neck of the woods. The sun stays up too long- makes people crazy. You oughta start a band like that and get off of that Bigsby. The Fins all think it's an ironing board anyway.
I said Hi to you over in the "Music" section in the Green Bay jam thread.
I'll be in Green Bay next year- I hope you are, too! |

Hey, you guys dont joke about psychobilly, its becoming an international epidemic and, we all need to do are part to combat it.
Just last night there was a horrific, flash hairspray fire at a Meteors concert on sunset strip.

PS Joel, you would sound great on a conselette |

At least the Psychobillies stay away from the steel guitar. Hey Lee, nice to hear from you! I just bought a Console Grande from the late 40's. When it arrives I'll post some pics to show it off. |

Hey Joel, you better bring that Console Grande to GreenBay then, we can have that jam all over again. Except we better lock the door and leave that Wakefield dude out, then we can all be the sorry @ss kings of the jam!! [This message was edited by Jussi Huhtakangas on 04 August 2006 at 10:18 AM.] |

Jussi,
Your English is too good. I think you are an imposter.
Anyway, tell Wakefield it's pedals only- and no more chicks watching- we hate that. Geeks only!
Bring your Bigsby and let me play it. It's not cool until you have a few more bar dings in it. |

Jöoel, what mean you? Me Englissh too god?? Me no inbooster!! But yeah, I agree with you, can't stand a guy who gets all the chicks just because he's smooth, looks good and plays great. Don't they know there's more to it...
And George, thank you in behalf of all of us, really means a lot when it's coming from people like you! Makes us try and learn more.

Joel,
Great stuff. I like the point where you were playing standard guitar, and started going all Merle Travis and then stopped!!! Should have kept on going!!! Great job. who do you play with regularily???

Hey Dave,
thanks a lot, I'm glad you dug the clip- and I'm glad I never thought some one would put it on the internet. I stopped because people started to clap so I thought I would quit while I was ahead. You heard all my licks, anyway!
I play around Chicago with several bands. I lead the Joel Paterson Trio which kinda sounds like delta blues mixed with Merle Travis. I play guitar, slide guitar and a little bit of steel in that, we play a lot at a place called the Hideout and Buddy Guy's Legends. My main band is Devil in a Woodpile- we play acoustic blues and ragtime and are on Bloodshot records, we play every tuesday at the Hideout if you are ever in Chicago. I play in a traditional honky tonk band called the Western Elstons. We play just enough to give me a little pedal steel practice. Sometimes I play with a great singer in town named Kelly Hogan.
Thanks for setting me up to plug my bands![This message was edited by Joel Paterson on 09 August 2006 at 06:14 PM.] |

Damn, JOel, you aren't that busy!!!!! Holy cow!!
Great stuff. I do a similar thing- My band is 706 UNION, which is honky-tonkin-swingin-blues. We shift from straight up honky tonk to straight ahead blues.. I can't mke my mind up, so we just do both. We do some steel-sax stuff which is kinda wierd, but pretty cool. I actually will be coming to Chicago in the next couple months, and I'll be sure to look you up when the trip is a go..
I'm off to get your CD.
Thanks!

Dave, are you near Allentown PA? I just learned that we're playing there on 30th September with our band and backing up Marti Brom. If you're near and have nothing else, come check us out!! I think the place is Grumpy's Bar Be que or something? |

Jussi-- having played JW's Bigsby at the GreenBay jam, could you share the tunings on the inside and middle necks? We don't often get such a close camera angle...so even though the fretboard is not in close view, I thought that between seeing & hearing the music, and knowing the tunings, some of us slower types might actually pick up a thing or two. Between his playing and your own, that Bigsby sounded just great.
Joel-- I got a kick out of your Travis picking, esp. on steel...not many guys would try that, let alone get it going as well as you. Pretty cool. |

Jussi,
Unfortunately, no I'm not near Allentown, Pa. I wish I could make that show and meet in person. Thats a good 4 hours at least for me, and on a school night. Darn. Where else will you be appearing in PA?
I'm close to Pittsburgh, PA, if that helps.

Stephan, the inside neck was C6 and I think the middle neck was E13. I played the tune Little Coquette on JW's guitar there then too, and on my own Bigsby I play it on E13, but I can't say for sure if it was on his middle or outside neck ( too many beers to remember such details ). That guy's mind works too fast for us mortals anyway, he might have changed tunings during the jam session.
Dave, that's too bad, would've been nice to see you too! I believe that's the only show in PA, the rest of the tour goes northbound on the east coast ending up in Montreal. [This message was edited by Jussi Huhtakangas on 10 August 2006 at 10:22 AM.] |

Jussi,
In that case, I might have to shift the schedule and make it out. It will be a long way, but its not every day you can meet a steeler from Finland, right???
I'll shoot you an email, If I can swing it.
