I am a very happy Carter SD 10 LDG style guitar. It is just awesome in every way. My guitar has the regular curved low profile neck and I was wondering if anyone has the ne w neck. If so is there a difference in sound, sustain etc?

Ron, I don't have a camera at this point but if you look at the Carter website you will see lots of their great guitars with the standard neck.

I doubt it, probably not enough to worry about, anyway. I see it as more of a cosmetic change, something that looks a little fancier, or more traditional.

I asked John Fabian about the premium necks at the Magnum Booth at NAMM. (I was wondering why they didn't offer them on 12 strings.)

Apparently the standard necks are pressed from sheet steel and the premium necks are made from a casting. So it would seem to me that it could make a difference in timbre of the guitar if you think the neck contributes to the sound at all.

I am a long time Emmons push pull player and I recently acquired a Carter D-10 with the machined necks and recently added true tone pickups. I don't know how other setups sound but I can honestly say this guitar has a lot of the unique qualities of a push pull including a huge mid range and note separation I have not heard in any other guitar. I don't know how this would translate into a guitar with the regular necks but I suspect that it would not be noticeable. Several years ago I remember Bud Carter being quoted as saying that the necks of steel guitars have no effect on tone.

Premium necks are machined from solid Aluminum. They are not made from castings.

Sorry for the mis-information, John Fabian. The main point of my post was that there was a difference in the way the two different necks were manufactured, and to point out that might contribute a different quality to the tone of the guitar.

Regarding Bruce's reference to Bud Carter's claim that the neck of a PSG has no affect on the tone (a claim I have also heard from others), I find that hard to believe. However, since Carter makes guitars with both wood neck (custom shop) and machined metal necks, they would be in a good position to make that comparison.

I'd love to hear test recordings of two PSG's (the same in all other respects) with wood and aluminum necks.

John
The Carter is working out great for me. It joins the ranks of the various Emmons and Sho-Buds I have owned as guitars I just play and enjoy. Bye the way I lost a hard drive last fall that had your latest e-mail address. Could you forward it to me so that I can update. Very Happy
