Could anyone who uses in ear monitors with their steel tell me if they are using a preamp, profex, etc or direct to the board & maybe how they like it? I play a single neck Franklin & a Wireless Melobar & may in the near future be in the position where I'll have to use in ears...Rene |

I have used in-ear monitors for about 5 years in the Praise & Worship band I play in at my church. I use a Digitech 2112 preamp/effects unit, into a Countryman active direct box direct to the board. We use Aviom personal mixers so each musician can set up their own mix. The output of my Aviom goes to a Shure PSM600 wireless in-ear system, with Shure E5 earphones. I use wireless because I sometimes play guitar or mandolin in the band, so I need to move away from the steel. This system works out very well for us. I use an Audio Technica wireless guitar system for guitar and mandolin.
Here's my "control center".

I've been using them for about 6 months now. I use my NV112 miced into the board. We were using the XLR out for awhile but it was sending too hot of a signal, and I still like some ambient sound. (For when the battery dies in the middle of a set ) It works great for me, but I think you could used any preamp/effects/etc. combo to use with in ears. _________________ Mullen RP D10, Peavey NV112, Hilton volume. I played with a set of in-ears for the first time this weekend at a showcase at school. I personally don't care for the noise-canceling ones we used because it was harder to hear what's going on where on stage, and you're totally at the mercy of the monitor guy. I'm sure it's just something to get used to, but I'd rather have my wedge. Btw, I always mic my amp going into the board, steel guitar into a full-range speaker system (for me) doesn't sound as good. |

Thanks for the replies,guys. I've had a Profex2(noisy),a 112 ( not powerful enough ), a 1000 (heavy),but not as heavy as the Nash 400 & 500 I've had, but I'm happy with the 1000, hate to give it up,I don't think the buds will ever replace the amps...Do you ? |

Rene, I've used in-ears for 4 years now and would not go back. I'm running direct out of a Revelation preamp into the board. We have a monitor split off our snake that goes into a Mackie board on stage so we can control our mix and tone in our ears. I use a Shure PSM 400 wireless with Westone UM-2 ear buds. The key for great in-ear tone, especially for steel, is dual driver earphones like the Westones or the Shure E5's. They have a separate low driver and crossover built in to better cover the vast range of frequencies a steel is capable of. Hope this helps. |

I agree Michael, I've used Shure E5 earphones from the beginning, and I'm able to hear everything well, from the bass to the mandolin. I'm thinking about getting a set of molded dual driver earphones for a little better isolation. I sit right in front of the drums, and even though they are behind a shield, I still get a lot of ambient drum sound. The molded phones should reduce this. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Rene, I've been using my inears for about 6 years now and I love them. I play through a rack and go direct out from my Tube Works amp which has xlr's. I have a 31 band eq in my mix so I get to tweek the sound any way I want. My drummer once told me that if I ever went with inears I would kick the floor monitors off the stage. I didn't understand what he was talking about until I made the move and bought mine. As with anything else it may or may not work for everyone. There are some of us who would rather not use them, but then the flip side of the coin there are those who love them. Best of luck what ever direction you choose to go. _________________ Mullen Royal Precision D10 Red Lacquer Pearl inlay 8&8
