I have just been listening to a song called 'Superskirt' by Connie Cato from the 1970s with Weldon Myrick on steel. What a fun little tune.

Who was she?

Connie enjoyed some mild chart success in the 1970s, her biggest hit was "Hurt" which went to #14 in 1975.

Kind Regards, Walter

In the late '60s and early '70s, we had a genre that developed...sort of a female "bubble-gum, country music". Artists like Connie Cato, Donny Fargo, Barbi Benton, Barbara Mandrell, Tanya Tucker, and several others, were among those who participated in this spate of "happy music" that seemed the antithesis of normal "cry in your beer" (downer) country stuff. Only Barbara and Tanya realized lasting fame, the others sort of faded off the charts after a hit or two, never to be heard from again, though most are still singing, in one form or another.

I could be wrong (duh), but I believe Ms. Cato "left the building" several years ago...

We backed Connie Cato in the 70's on a show in which Ronnie Milsap was the main act. You mentioned "Hurt". We only had a chance to run over a song or two with her for about 5 minutes. I know we must have been musically ignorant but we had never heard the song "Hurt" before. I didn't understand at the time but she was going to do "Hurt" come hell or high water. Now that you informed us that it was a hit for her I understand why. Well, we didn't get the high water if you know what I mean. I think we knew about the first two chords and it was a train wreck from then on. Most of the song consisted of the bass player searching for the chords. I never was so glad to hear song end in my life. She seemed to be a really sweet gal though.

In the early 70's, I was playing 6 nights a week in Joplin and the owner used to book singles to play with us. Connie played with us for a week and I still have the autographed picture of her that she gave me. Really a sweet gal! That was the same time frame that Wayne Kemp also played there plus several others. Ahhh, the good old days. Ray

Craig... as in, "Elvis has left the building..." it's become a euphimism around here for passing on...

Hey, thanks Walter, thats a fine thing you're doing. I had forgotten that she did that song, I remember it by Brenda Lee, I think, and Timi Yuro (sp) on the pop charts. Juice Newton did it very well live at a concert.

I poked around the internet looking for a Connie Cato biography but could not find one.
Only that she was born in St.Louis Mo. on March 30,
1955.
Strange that. I would think that as well known as she was during her career that there would be a press release or a magazine article somewhere.
Her records are remembered and available.
Anybody know of a bio for her?
