As all you Q-heads know, next week NRBQ will be performing two reunion shows in North Hampton, Mass., on April 27 and 28. I'll be one of The Whole Wheat Horns at these shows and since I also play steel, they want to rent me one for the show on the 28th (Sat.) They're not having any luck finding me one, so does anybody from up near there have any ideas for stores/players, etc.? We're not picky - single neck Maverick or Carter Starter would be fine. Here's a chance to meet the Q, make some dough, get your steel autographed by the band and see a great show. Both Johnny and Big Al will be there!! |

Dang, would I like to make that show. I visited with Big Al when he was here in December with Vince Gill. I am a huge Q fan (both band and smoked meat)... _________________ John Macy

Jim,Get ahold of Doug Beaumier at http://www.playsteelguitar.com/ or give Downtown sounds a call. Doug is one of that areas great steelers also a Forum member and he is affiliated with the Northamptons Downtown Sounds music store which handles carter. I'm sure he can set you up. I take it the show will be at Pearl St. and this should be an overflow crowd. Tell Doug i said hello.

I played some gigs with Steve Ferguson"Founding Member" in the early 70's when I lived in New Paltz N.Y.he had been thrown out of the Q,I had just got my driver's license and drove to the gig's,Steve didn't drive. While driving over a bridge one Sun.morning at 3:00am Steve decided to punch his girlfriend who was sitting between us in the front seat in the face as hard as he could,I slammed on the brakes and the car spun around and cam to a screeching halt...as did my association with Steve.Big Al is the coolest! _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... New Rhythm & Blues Quartet. The best live band I've ever heard. They have a variety of really great original music and play it extremely well. They play the deepest blues shuffles, rockabilly pockets, reggae grooves and straight up rock & roll you'll ever hear. |

Michael is so right--has to be the best live band I have ever seen. My band used to open a lot of shows for them in New England in the '70s.
By the way, Big Al is a great songwriter and has enjoyed a fair amount of success on the country charts--one frequent collaborator is Bill Anderson...
Check him out (and be sure and click on songwriting awards for a song list...)

I played with Big Al back in the Wildweeds, in the first half of 1969. He was a gas to play with even then. Tell him hey for me, please. It's been a really long time since we've spoken. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Thanks Joe, I'll contact Doug right away. And great to hear some good testifyin' from you all. I'll be in Hog Heaven to say the least. I think Steve Ferguson has mellowed out alot since then..... |

For those of you not familiar - Big Al is Al Anderson, who was the lead guitarist for "Q" - NRBQ - for a very long time. NRBQ is one of the great rock and roll bands, doing a record with Carl Perkins in the late 60s/early 70s, and being a mainstay in the Northeast for a couple of decades. Managed to somehow never have a really big hit, but they are great and much-loved by many.
Wish I could be home in Mass for this. Sounds cool having NRBQ with a steel player. |

Hi Jim,
If you are still looking...I'm sure I can help you out.
I rented Big Al my Hammond B3 for Reece Wyman when he played in Northampton on New Years Eve.
I caught one of the 35th year "Q" reunion shows at the Calvin a while back. Great!
I'd let you use my steel but it's a lefty. Johnny S. would probably have fun with that one!
Anyway, I know all the steel players in the area so I can find you one.
Let me know if you are still looking or have Eric Shuer give me a call.

I'll bet this will be awesome. Big Al has been working in Vince Gill's band last I heard... what an amazing band and, as an Al anderson fan... his songwriting is amazing... "beverly" is as good as it gets! |

Greg,
Thats funny that you have a lefty. I am in Mass for this week and the next, but have a wedding on that weeking. I have my two steels with me and would loan them too, but they are lefties as well. Unfortunate, but I am missing all the good stuff. George Stait is playing down at Mohegan Sun that weekend too.
