I've got McAfee antivirus installed and have their firewall and antivirus enabled. I've disabled Windowss firewall and antivirus as I've read somewhere that more than one running could cause problems. Is this the right thing to do? Whenever I run Spybot it shows Windows antivirus and firewall being disabled as a problem. I'm assuming that Spybot doesn't detect the McAfee firewall and antivirus and thinks I'm unprotected. Should I leave the Windows firewall and antivirus turned off?

Yes, everything I've seen says to only have one firewall as they can conflict. And the McAfee is probably better than the Windows since the Windows firewall is incoming only and does not protect outgoing as most other firewalls do. |

I worded my question wrong. I assumed I had disabled Microsoft antivirus because of the Spybot message which reads under "Problems" after a scan-
Microsoft Window Security Center.Antivirus Disable Notify. When I click on the + next to the message I get -
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\SecurityCenter\AntivirusDisabledNotify!= Registry Change
I went to the Security Center and I do show Windows firewall as being disabled and McAfee firewall enabled. I couldn't find anything about Windows Antivirus at the Security Center. _________________ "If we live in fear of banjos, then the banjos have won".

That's because there ain't no such thing as Microsoft Anti Virus. There hasn't been an included, Microsoft supported anti virus program with the Windows OS since the first release of Windows 95. Microsoft has since relied upon third party security vendors to provide virus protection for Windows. The closest thing Microsoft has available is Windows Defender, which is an anti-spyware program, and the once a month updated release of the Malicious Software Removal Tool, which comes with the monthly Windows Updates.
I would like to make everybody aware that while there is no current Windows anti virus program, there are fraudulant anti virus programs on the 'net that sneak onto your computer, then warn you about finding problems that can only be fixed by purchasing the product, using false positives as a goad to purchase. These are sleazeware programs like WinAntiVirusPro2006/2007, which are detected and removed by Spybot Search and Destroy and all other legitimate anti spyware programs. There is a regularly updated list of these slimeball anti spyware and anti virus products at http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Thanks Jack and Wiz, I'll sleep better now. I would think though that Spybot S&D would know that Microsoft doesn't have an antivirus and not be telling me that it's disabled.

Jude;
Spybot does funny things occasionally, and the complaints about the Windows Security Center Alerts for firewalls and anti virus products can sometimes be over the top. You can right click on anything that appears in the Spybot S&D results and choose to ignore that product or that detection in future tests. That should quiet it down considerably. You can also tell Spybot to ignore cookies, if they are of no concern to you (I ignore all cookies).
