On Thursday I received my new Zumsteel Hybrid. It's a D-10 8X8, with True tones. It's Zebrawood mica. It was delivered exactly on time,(EDIT: EARLY) with no drama or surprises. It has all of the design, construction and detail quality that has become a hallmark of the brand. As you all know, Bruce is a great guy, and is a pleasure to deal with. This guitar is a really good'un...even bigger and more lush sounding than my black hybrid (number eight) (which I think is awesome, in it's own right). It seems that this one's overtones are coming from a slightly darker warmer midrange place, with tremendous sustain in the bottom, and across the tonal spectrum. (must be that quartersawn formica) The highs are very sweet and creamy sounding, but it still has tons o' punch, and is very balanced. This one also seems to be a little more "forgiving" of less than good technique. Of course it plays like butter, and sounds great from open to above the double octave. Another beauty...thanks Bruce!

In reviewing my initial post let me add this observation for clarity's sake: I have played about a half dozen Hybrid Zumsteels. On Friday afternoon I had three hybrid Zums set up side by side in my home for tonal and other comparisons. The differences between them are really quite small. They all have a desirable sound that is (to my ear), unique to this guitar type, and yes, have a lot in common with the best of PP tone.
Of course as in all musical instruments, one may have a tonal emphasis that shifts marginally (emphasize marginally) in one direction or another, and that is what I was observing, but I think what is more interesting, and important, is how consistent, all the guitars sound and play.
I think I also neglected to say that I love how it looks. Could not be happier...JW |

Hey Doug,
You will not be disappointed. I think classic black looks fantastic with the elegant pearl stripe (a subtle touch of bling). The Zebrawood hides the dust...
BTW... My new guitar was in fact delivered EARLY...It's promised date was May. So there ya go...Best wishes...JW |

John,
Congrats on the new Hybrid. Looks great man and I enjoy your comments on the tonal qualities. I've been contemplating ordering one from Bruce for awhile now myself. You, Doug and I are long-time push-pull guys so I surely respect your opinions. I've also owned and played four ZumSteels since '82 so I know what Bruce is all about.
Anyway, thanks for sharing and I hope you're well. Have fun with that new horn !!!
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |

John,
Best of luck, with another "new Zum". It looks fantastic!
You're making me jealous. Mine's getting to be 4 years old, and I'm getting the urge for another one.
Again, good luck! I know you and the Zum will treat each other wonderfully. |
