Anyone know who the steel player was on this? It's circa 1980. Just got a new turntable and am listening to a bunch of my old vinyl stuff.

I played accoustic guitar on most of BB records during that era. Don't recall a lot of steel though.
He did on use Pete Drake and Weldon some and also his road player as well. All I remember is his nickname "Gator" Don;t think this is much help.

Hey Jack,

Could the "Gator" you mentioned be Glenn Ray(McGuirt). He's the only steeler I know with that nickname. I know he worked with Tom T. Hall for quite some time, and I think maybe Bare, but I'm not sure. I'm curious now, I'll call him later to find out.

Thanks! I can tell you that it sure as heck doesn't sound like Pete Drake. It had occurred to me that it might be Weldon. Was good, whoever it was.

I seem to know from somewhere that Bare hated steel players.....dont know why...used to get drunk on stage and then expose himself and try to "water"their steel...his band members used to stop him.......I am pretty sure I have a tape somewhere of a well renowned Steel player......x early Buck Owens...Lots of time with Waylon Jennings.......but I am not going to tell you Ralphs name...youl have to guess..and iff he will tell you the story...well that is fine
