hey -just joined up & thought id say hello
my names spencer cullum im 23 and am based in london, u.k although i like to think of detroit u.s as a second home.
i play pedal steel and slide guitar in a u.s group called the deadstring brothers

and charlie - i think us brits used to suck lime's in the navy years back, hence limeys..

hey rocco - thought you'd be on this site - you had the black steel and the thinline tele - me and ross (the keyboard player) really loved your music, beach boys holland meets arther lee's love kinda music...
really enjoyed that venue aswell - hopefully will cross paths soon

Welcome, Spencer. Nice cross-genre tracks. I think I hear some B.J. Cole influence here and there. Must be a trip to get lessons from him. His playing on Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" was one of the pieces that inspired me to take up pedal steel. I too started on a Maverick. But I quit for school, career and family for 25 years. Now I am back at it and also play an S12 universal. I dabble in alt country, blues, funk/fusion, and free jazz.

yeh its cool getting a lesson from b.j cole, he lives about 25 mins from me, which is cool - has a great tone from his universal kline guitar..and is really open to all kinds of music.

Tiny Dancer + Maverick = me too! BJ Cole was definitely the first pedal steel player I was ever aware of. I love what he did on "No Regrets" by the Walker Brothers, absolutely killer. Got a friend who knows him and I've been meaning to give him a ring about some lessons but I always felt a bit "not worthy". Maybe I will soon.
Still working on my chops and not playing out just yet Spencer, but as soon as I find that local Waylon covers band I will be rockin' around your neighbourhood in a rusty fiat uno. Which reminds me, going to need driving lessons as well...  |

Yeah, B.J. Cole was an interesting influence on a lot of us in the '70s. Growing up in the Southeast (Mississippi) I had always heard steel in country music. But I was more into classical music, rock, blues and jazz. When I heard B.J.'s beautiful reverb-drenched pedal steel background part in Tiny Dancer, that opened up for me the dramatic possibilities for pedal steel in all kinds of music. I had to have one.
One of my bands, The Philadelphia Blues Messengers, has a web site in progress (thebluesmessengers.com). There are a couple of live samples there, but I don't have anything good in them. We are now in the studio working up some demos and eventually a whole CD. Also, I just got a little digital recorder (Zoom H4). I'm learning how to record myself and upload MP3 tracks, and eventually I'll post some samples of classical music, jazz and blues on my universal. |
