April 11th. means it is two years since Jerry left us. Still think of him, not so much his music, but as a very considerate Patron of our Association. When Bill Sevesi was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for his contribution to music, Jerry sent an audio tape which we played when we made a fuss of Bill. Jerry growled " Waal Sevesi, it seems that you have got yourself something pretty important here ..." And another time, " Waal Mac, it is a beautiful Sunday morning here and I just thought I would put down a few solo tracks for your members and see what they think of these old Hawaiian songs." Nice thought, beautiful playing, nice guy.

I just finished reading two biographies these past three weeks. One was titled "It Was A Trip on The Wings of Music," it is the life of Jerry Byrd. The second one was titled "Settin' The Woods On Fire, the True Confessions of Hank Williams Steel Guitar Player," the career and life of my friend Don Helms.

Both books are really worth the cost and are easy reading. The books are not only Steel guitar informative, and historical, but also they are funny and at times sad. As a teacher I read alot, and recommend others read too. I'm thankful that both of these steel greats got their biographies out in their own words. They share alot of insight into the early years of steel guitar, recording and the careers of several well knowns in the music business.

I ordered my Don Helms book from Don himself, and my Jerry Byrd book I got from Amazon.com Again, both are well worth the cost. I bet Don Helms would sign his for you too, if you ask him.

May GOD bless you all!

Great tunes on the JERRY BYRD FAN CLUB site; usually two new songs per week, so check in often.

Another great book: by Howard White a fine steel guitarist in Nashville "All Roads out of Nashville".
If you want to learn how exciting it was being a sideman in the early days, here's where you should look to get your factual information.
