Nothing political here, I have just got hold of ‘Taking the long way’ a bit late I know. I am a great fan of the Chicks previous recordings - great performance, musicianship and production.
This CD is one of the worst productions I have ever heard. A wall of over compressed mush. What’s going on? |

It's called the Loudness War - it started 10 to 15 years ago, and the purpose was apparently to make music sound as loud as commercials on the radio.
Fortunately this trend is turning, but there's still a lot of good music being squeezed to death and becoming victims to this Loudness War.

is Phil Spector coming back??
his wall of sound worked for the Shirelles but ruined George Harrisons' All Things Must Pass.
I like separation and headroom when I listen to music.
a good reason to pick up Steinar's CD 'Northern Lights/ Southern Moon'. |

No, I think Dubya and the "vast right wing conspiracy" had a hand in this. I believe someone brought in a different master than the one the Chicks intended to bring to the pressing plant and ...
Just kidding. |
