Topic: Custom cases for Bakelite Ricks |

Does anyone know if anyone is making custom form-fit cases (similar to a violin case) for Bakelite Ricks? I need to do some flying this year and was hoping to get 'er in the overhead compartment.

Hi, Sean, check out the gig bags I have in stock now- if the measurements are right, they'd do the trick. Very well padded, nicest bag I've seen yet for Lap Steel. Fits my Oahu Tonemaster perfectly.

| A cute little Canadian-looking hsc I found at a yard sale was identified as being for a Godin electric mandolin. I have no idea what a Godin electric mandolin looks like, but the case is high-quality, sturdy and just a tad loose around a bakelite--just needs a little padding around the edges. |

Can anyone suggest any brands that have suitable inside dimensions to accommodate a Rickenbacher? None of the web site listings I've checked give any dimensions whatever, but most of the "shaped" brands seem too narrow in the middle. At a glance, it looks like Lanikai and ProTec might be good bets. |

The cases I use are Bushman brand. They do require some remodeling to remove the existing accessory compartment, and use the material for extra padding. The gig bag idea is also great. I once transported a bakelite in a gig bag under the seat on an airplane with no problems. Fortunately the airport guard knew what the steel bar was for. Elderly Instruments in Michigan has a good assortment of baritone ukulele cases.

Ron and Mike, thanks for the suggestions. I'm doing a cross-country move in a couple of months and I have hardshell cases for both my bakelites, but definitely don't want to trust my Silver Hawaiian to the flimsy gig bag it's in now.
Ron, Bushman is one of the brands I was looking at. Which model do you have, the vaguely trapezoidal one with the fabric cover or the shaped case finished in a very Fenderish tweed? Elderly is out of both at the moment, but there are some other dealers who have at least one of the two models in stock.
Mike, is the Ritter you have intended for baritone uke? I checked their web site but don't see anything that looks like a large uke size. |

Here is a page with some uke cases. I bought a dulcimer case for my National and it fits nicely. I bought it from an independant dealer because he took the time to take exact measurements for me. It cost $10 more than at Elderly but I figured it was worth the great service. The 'Uke Lady of Texas' has an honest face  http://www.ukeladymusic.com/cases.html
