I want to publicly thank Chuck Abend for so much. He’s helped my steel playing a great deal since I started. I would call him a Mentor and he’s jokingly called me his “protege.”

After several months, more than I care to admit, of trying to totally rebuild a 1973 MSA Classic D-10 I thought I was nearly done. Things seemed to be working on the E9 neck and C6 was in place. I took it over to Chuck’s house for some “fine tuning.” You can guess the rest. It was a “disaster.” Chuck saw thru the mess I made. He found several things wrong I hadn’t been able to see. One of those issues really caught me by surprise. My MSA was non-standard height with longer than stock pedal rods. A bent stop plate on the changer was another. This list goes on and on.

Chuck took time away from his very cool RC aircraft projects to fix my steel. He did in a week what I spent two years trying to do. he even gave me a couple of lessons on C6!

If you know Chuck, send him an email...
Let him know you’ve heard about his skill with a pedal steel. Both on top of as well as underneath. Maybe he’ll tell you about his beautiful Red 12 string Zum that sports his custom made MIDI pickup! Its amazing to hear synth/organ/horn/string/piano/etc. sounds from a psg. Chuck could take a gig away from a keyboardist if he wanted! He’s a mad scientist!

Chuck is a mentor to many here in Kansas City. April 7 we’re having a first-ever KC Steeler’s jam and learning exchange. Chuck, I’m sure, will be the one we’ll stand around as he shows us all how to do it.

thanks again, Chuck
