Well, it's new to me. Dropped the low G to E and my world opened up. I noticed the most excellent Jimmy Heffernan does this too.

You can also raise your low D to E and you have a G6 with the root on the 6th string (as well as the 3rd string).

These two are good for a "6th on the fly"

I've been playing along to "Crazy" and this gives me major triads, minors, & two string dom7 within a two fret box.
